LOP
Just thought I would share this story:

I was at my local sporting goods store today and there was this guy that was buying a new deer rifle for what looked to be his son (probably about 18yr). Anyway, wearing a just a t-shirt, he put it up to his shoulder and seemed satisfied that it was a correct fit. My problem with so many people is that they get a LOP that is too long when added clothing is taken into account.
I am 5'11'' and for me a correct LOP is 13.25 inches. With added clothing that drops down to about 12.25. You can always add on length but you cant magically take it away

Almost without fail, that comes from people that do not live in the north. I'm 6'0" and the longest LOP I have is 13" on a Remington 7600. The bolt actions are a mite shorter.

I'm only 5'10 but 13 works well for me...more to it that height. I have long arms for 5'10 height. Middle finger to middle finger my span is 6'2.

But true, add some layers and now you have a problem!!!!!!!

I just ordered a new stock with 13 in LOP and they argued with me--
shocker
But its being cut my way tu2

Like you said, you can always add length, IIRC Col Cooper came up with 12.5 as the correct length.

Good point! Everyone seems to want a 14" LOP minimum these day...maybe thinking the longer the stock, the less the recoil and threat of "scope eye". But recoil tolerance grows greatly with a stock that fits properly....kind of defeats the purpose.

LOP= 12.5"on a bench; warm to hot day. Fat, muscle and short arms. beerroger

I've spent a lifetime as a shotgunner.

LOP is vital for fit and recoil management, as well as some other stock dimension factors.

IME, most folks use LOP's for shotguns AND rifles that are much too short of optimal. With a rifle, I think that the bolt throw has a lot to do with how long it should be. If you work the bolt fast with your face on the stock, how comfortable are you with the bolt hitting your nose with a 13" LOP?

Yes and LOP has nothing to do with "scope eye". Some folks just don't seem to know how to mount a scope.
