The latest darling of the special operations crowd for sniping is the 300 Sloan/Norma. It is similar to the 338 Lapua Magnum. The shoulder is pushed back a bit, and its angle is about 30 degrees, if I recall correctly. It pushes the Berger 230 Hybrid tactical target bullet comfortably supersonic out past 1,500 meters.

A fellow I know wants to rebarrel his Sako TRG 42 to this cartridge. It feeds nicely from a 338 Lapua Magnum AI magazine. He wants to put on a 27" barrel, and top the rifle with a Night Forces 5-25 x 56 mm ATACR scope with a FFP and the Horus (58?, 59?) reticle, and a Thunder Beast suppressor.

Does anyone here have any experience with this cartridge? These days, a 6 mm Creedmoor sounds more appealing to me.

I talked to a gunsmith (young and arrogant) who said they could build my a 300 Norma on a standard Remington 700 action. "We just open the face up." Making the .585 from a standard model 700 action leaves a grand total of 57.5 thou around the case head. Fortunately he had an important meeting to attend to. Cripes All Mighty!

Lots of people are building LAPUAS on 700 actions Remington even offers it. Scares the crap out of me......

For all it does you might as well trim the entire front of a Rem 700 back to the bolt face since it is entirely cosmetic. The "three rings of steel" was/is a preposterous advertising gimmick. It is the case head and the case head alone which contains the pressure for the last quarter-inch of case and the meaningless extension of the bolt face has nothing to do with it.

Now, it is true that with a case head failure the protruding ring in front of the bolt face can help to partially divert escaping gas which may somewhat ameliorate the potential damage from such an event. But that "ring" does nothing to prevent a case head failure.

Take the "ring of steel" away and you have exactly the same breeching as with a Mauser or a dozen other types of strong bolt actions.

There is also an other new .300 Magnum constructed by Norma: it is called .3oo Blaser agnum simular to the .300 Dakota. it is based on a shortened .404 Jeffery-case (2.550)

Base diameter on 338 Lapua are 0,91mm larger than on 300 rem ultra the lapua has a max pressure of 61000psi versus 65000psi for the ultra.

Unless you are killing a Taliban way out there, the 6mm Creedmore makes a lot more sense.
