340 WM Still the Best LR Elk Buster...Agree?
I used to have a .300Weatherby that ran 180gn to the hilt, I used to have .338win that was becoming stressed with 225gn pills at 2800fps.
.338bore-Weatherby case- slick 225IB(.550bc)at a relatively stress free 2950 is still very hard to beat.....Do you agree?
bear in mind 26" tubes are the norm for me in magNumbs.

Stressed in what way, Woodjack? I run 250 grain Partition Golds at 2750 fps out of my M77 without any issues. Please elaborate.

Make mine a RUM please. 338 RUM 225 accubond @ 3140fps, shoots VERY flat and hits like a frieght train. I've also found it very easy to load for.

My .338 win Mag shoots 210 Partitions at 3050 fps, and that's not even the max load for it !!! Don't know what you mean by "stressed" . I do know that a 210 Partition at that speed drops elk like I've never seen before !!!

My buddy hunts w/ a 340wby, it is a game killer for sure. In the right rifle, it's not any more diff. to shoot than a 300mag & seems to hit way harder. Then again, I like just about anying in 34 bore. thumb

Totally agree about the 210 NP... only bullet I've ever used on elk in the 338 WM. I run them slightly slower though... 3,050 is a stout max in a 24" bbl IME.

If you're asking whether that caliber is 'effective', well, sure. If you're asking whether it's necessary, no, I don't agree. As for whether it's 'best', that depends on your criteria. There are a number of considerations, such as accuracy (here I mean more the ability of the shooter to shoot accurately, not the instrinsic characteristics of the cartridge itself). An Elk which is gut shot or has a shattered leg is just as gut or leg shot with a cannon ball as it is with a .243. Then there's bullet performance. A more heavily constructed bullet that is intended for tougher / dangerous game, driven at high velocity might not open on an Elk. In that case you will simply 'drill' a .30 / .33 / .35 'hole' through and out the other side and will actually be less effective than a .270 Win bullet that opens properly.

This comes down to what's best for a particular hunter. For me I can definitively state that no, none of the big magnums are the best choice for ME to use against Elk. Personally, I would go with .270 Win and depend on good bullet placement and performance from the 'standard' 130 grain.

Bullet placement is EVERYTHING... But if you can shoot it accurately, use all the gun you want to... Last elk hunt was my trusty '06, this elk hunt will be my new 338-378 Weatherby... Factory loaded 225 grain TSX at 3180... If you want to REALLY reach out and touch something this cartridge is unsurpassed... The ranges here don't support the use of this cannon but I shoot it well and I shoot it often so it will be the primary this year...

Woodjack ----- I hunted with a .300 Winny for years and took many Elk with three different rifles. I then got a .340 Wby for a Alaska Yukon Moose hunt (I know I didn't have to have it but any excuse to try something new). I worked up a load with 250 grain Nosler Partition Gold at 2950 fps and got my Moose, Bull Elk and Deer that year with the combo, all one shot kills. I later refined my Elk load to 225 grain Barnes XLC and North Forks at 3150 fps and took several Bulls with it. I then hunted with a .338 Lapua as did my grandson and 225 or 240 grain North Forks at 3150 fps. I think the fast .338's are excellent Elk medicine and would put them up against the best anywhere. I have since gone on to a couple of .358 STA's my son and I shoot that put the 250 and 270 grain North Forks where you want them at 2950 fps, they are awesome Elk rounds, and also did quite well on plains game in Africa. The reason I am accumulating so many is with six grandsons, a grandaughter and a great grandson, I want them all to have an excellent Elk rifle when I go to the happy hunting grounds. wave Good shooting.

I'd agree that it is certainly among the best all around calibers out there - certainly will put the hammer down on any elk you'd be willing to shoot at.

I can't wait to turn mine loose on some. Smiler

So, you define 'long range' as being somewhere between 300 yards and 1 mile undergound in a concrete bunker? :P

I was thinking about that but decided I didn't want to drag that twenty something pound rifle all over the place so I figured I'd take the pop gun, it's enough for the job Big Grin...
