I bought the 300 H&H listed in the classifieds...1953 Rem 721 and picked it up on Friday. I loaded a few test loads to see how it shot before spending money on a stock and bedding....etc. I put one of my scopes on it that I knew was good. Two of the groups I shot with the test loads are shown below...all shot at 100yds.
Any pet loads would be appreciated.

My hunting partner and I have been loading 200gr. bullets. My partner has a Winchester M70 Pre 64 and loads 67.5grs. of H4831ssc with a Nosler 200gr. Accubond using CCI250 primer. For my Remington 721 been loading 66.0grs. of H4831ssc with a Nosler 200gr. Partition. Going to try some Barnes 165gr. TTSX and 180gr. TTSX bullets in the 300 H&H.

5 shots: 2970, 2980, 2958, 2974, 2962, 2962: 3 shot cloverleaf, 4-shot 3/4". Pulled the 5th shot. Africa Load.

I'm sure you can eek out more velocity with other powders but I didn't bother. That was enough load to break the petals off a TSX on a shoulder-shot Kudu at 70 yards and darn near 40" of penetration. (*entered behind the last rib, lodged in far off shoulder).

My second Kudu (same load) was a 280 yard, single-shot kill right behind the shoulder.

Don't overthink this too much - my buddy used the 180 TSX at 2600 fps in a 30-06 and downed everything up to Zebra with one shot.

I have been using the Barnes 180 gr TTSX since it came out using RL22. I've used the combo with several different .300 H&H's. Very accurate and all one shot kills to this date.

I have a similar load with RL 19 and same bullets. 69 grs and 180 gr sbt. Time to go hunting and kill stuff.

Mine loves: 71g of RL 22 and 180 barnes TTSX's

68 grains of H4831sc, 180 Partition, Winchester brass and a Federal 215 primer gets 3000fps

Doesn't look like your test loads need much "improving". I would see no reason not to use either of them, provided they continue to yield the desired accuracy and velocities. A single three-shot group may not tell the full story of a load, however.

I've always found that relatively slower powders which fill most of the case usually give the most consistent performance with the least chance of pressure spikes. My .300 H&H load is 73.5 grains of IMR 7828 SSC with a Nosler Accubond 180 at 2960 fps. This powder/bullet combination can be pushed somewhat faster, but the velocity is similar to the historical speed of the classic round and provides ample power for the game it is intended for.

I only took a few loads to the range to test on that first outing. I have loaded more rounds with the loads that grouped the best that first time out. I have plenty of IMR4350 and IMR4831 on hand for my doubles but I do have some H4831 that I use in my 270Wby. I plan to try some loads this weekend with 180gr TSX's in addition to the 180gr Sierra's that shot well last weekend.

Accurate in 4 different 300 H&H rifles (custom & factory) and flat out lethal everywhere I've used it in North America, NZ and ZIM.
Probably not the most aerodynamic, but up to 300 yds, worse than Ebola.

I second what DIs says except I am using 180 Nosler Accubonds.

I am leaving for Africa in less than three weeks and am taking a 300 H&H.
After testing:
180gr TTSX, GMX,& Nosler Partition
H4831sc and Hunter powder

I settled on

Norma brass, WLRM
64.5gr Hunter
180gr TTSX
Ave 2910fps and averages right at an inch for 5 shot groups

These were some of the results from today. I shot the same loads that grouped the best initially and the IMR4350 load with 180gr Sierra Pro-Hunter bullets was very consistent. I also tried 180gr TSX's with IMR4831 and RL22. It grouped well with IMR4831 but just doesn't seem to like RL22. It also seems to like a load about 1gr below the listed max in the data I was using. I have not chronographed any of the loads yet.

My pre-64 Model 70 really likes 180 Gamekings and 71 gr of RL23. I finally got to chronograph this load a couple of weeks ago and was getting 3150 fps.

Take that 180gr. TSX load and go hunt everything up to buffalo.

for the last 60 years (my best guess) Ive been shooting the 200 gr. Nosler at 3000 FPS in my 26 inch barreled 721 and mod. 70...Early on I shot the 180 nosler and whatever, but the 200 gr. just does a better job on everything from pronghorns to elk, even eland and buffalo.

Three groups over three weekends with different temperatures and humidity with 67gr of IMR4831 with 180gr Sierra's and 180gr TSX. I'm done with load development and now to replacing the stock to fit me for LOP.

Not unusual. So sometimes "yes".

I got superb accuracy with 68.4grs of IMR 4831 and the 170 Lapua Naturalis...

Some load would work with the 165 or 168 Barnes TSX as well

My 300 H&H is built on a Rem made P-14 action with a barrel from Harry McGowen. It shoots just about any 150 thru 200 gr bullet I've tried well. But it seems to really like 200 gr bullets and 7828. The Speer 200 spritzers are cheap and I use them for practice. The 200 gr partition shoots to the same spot with the same load. Both of those bullets will group around an inch @ 200 yds. That's ALL I shoot in that old rifle.

I don't know if all those Rem 721 in 300 H&H are accurate but I have never owned one or know of one that wouldn't shoot great plus. and everyone I have played with seemed to shoot about any bullet or load to the same POI..Mine latterly shoot everything to the same POI..Its a plain jane keeper..I go to elk camp and put 5 150gr. bullets in my pocket, and 4 200 gr. Noslers in my gun..See a big deer, slip one of the 150s in it and take the shot is the plan anyway!!

As to powder, my old batch of Milsurp 4831, the stuff that Jack O'Connor swore by, gets me in excess of 100 FPS than any of todays powders and with less pressure, but I dislike using it as it cuts in the powder measure and I have to weigh charges, so I prefer RL-22 or 19 these days..
