Advice Needed
I was at the local sporting good store over lunch and saw a Remington model 700 stainless in a 7mm Ultra Mag for $360 brand new. So on an impulse I bought.

Now I know nothing about the round at all and am looking for advice. There seems to be very few factory ammo choices so reloading will most likely be a requirement.

Any opinions on this round. I was thinking of topping it with a Leupold 4.5-14x40 scope. Please let me hear good or bad or both about this round or set up.

Thanks

It looks nice in the gun safe but do you have any info regarding the round?

The 7mmRUM is a true overbore round. For handloading I would stay w/ 160-175gr bullets & slow powders like RL25, H1000, etc. The gain over a 7mmSTW using bullets below 160gr is hardly worth the extra powder IMO.

I have a 7mmDakota, same case but shorter. Using IMR7828 & 160gr bullets, I can easily get 3250fps. Your RUM will truly shine using heavier bullets, which to me, is why you buy a large capacity magnum in the first place. beer

I thought this was a site where knowledgeable people helped others out. It isn't?

Anyway all I am asking is if anyone has first hand experience with this round and what they think of it.

Sorry if that brings down wrath upon me. I really don't care if someone wants to bust my balls on the internet. Some faceless nameless dweeb does not bother me.

I was just hoping for some advice and feed back nothing more, nothing less.

You might also ask on the reloading board about suggested loads.

Good luck with the new rifle!

I think it is. Generally, anyway!

I concur with the thought that the 7mm Ultra should be used with the slowest powders you can find, with 175-grain (or heavier) bullets with the highest B.C. you can find in .284" diameter - a real long-range round!!

Tnomen,
First "Welcome to the Zoo!!!" Big Grin
Second, if ya gonna play with us ya gotta grow a thicker hide. Some of the posts around here (all over the site) can be taken wrong or some can be "stingers." (not trying to be a butthead, just some advice!)
Now about your question: I would also suggest reposting this over on the reloading forum RELOADING as Charles_Helm suggested. Some of the reloaders don't look here.
Also you might do a search on the favorite loads forum FAVORITES and see if something will fit your needs.
