RustyTook an old friend to the range today
Just wanted to share a good story with y'all today!
My daughter and son-in-law wanted to go to the range today. I have an old Mauser action 30-06 in, I think an old Bishop stock. I shot my second deer with the rifle a long time ago and in a galaxy, far, far away.
The rifle has no maker's name on it. Don't know who made the barrel. The scope a fixed power Bausch & Lomb that sits in a Stith Mounts, of San Antonio, TX.
I inherited the rifle from my uncle Guy. The rifle has been in my family for as long as I can remember. I'd say circa 1955 if not older.
The ammo we used was some I found in a pouch that my uncle had reloaded. It is at least 50 years old if not older. They looked Klean Bore primed and 150 grain bullets.
So today, after wiping the dust of the lens of the scope, checking the bore, my son-in-law from sandbags at 50 yards, fired this group.
I had intended to rework the old rifle put a new scope, mounts and a stock on her, and give her to my son-in-law, the good Scotsman, who loves my daughter!
He told me that he'd take the rifle, as is!

It was good to see my old friend, begin a new life with another good man, my son-in-law!

Thank you for sharing. I love those old sporters. If you hand load, you can extend your fun with the rifle even further. Looks like this one was special in deer camp. More snow on the way with 5 below now. Nice to get warm with your story.

AtkinsonGreat story Rusty, takes me back to 1945 or there abouts when we couldn't get ammo for our deer rifles, all the ammo was going to WW2 for the war effort, but dad picked up some 30-06 military ammo someplace..GI ball stuff and thats what we hunted deer with for about 2 or 3 years as I recall...It was bang they dropped because the bullet tumbled or you had one hell of a chase on your hands before they dripped dry...We ground the tips off but the effect of that was eratic to say the least, finally we just took head shots and that seemed to be the best answer to the situation..
We lived on deer meat on our ranch in the Texas Big Bend country and on our leased place in Mexico adjacent to the park..I remember when my dad came home one day and said "no more hunting deer, so and so is getting $25 per deer" It took me a year to develope a taste for beef. From that day on the deer were worth more than beef and that has not changed todate...

George SemelI don't think I would do anything to that rifle. Other than shoot it now and again, and take it hunting as is. Rifle's like that should be left alone. Now if you what something for the Son in Law, there are plenty of rifles around. Or have something made up just for him.

DMBRusty,
That's about as good of a story as I've ever read...!! Kudos to you, and to your son-in-law. He sounds like a keeper. He showed a lot of maturity by telling you not to change a thing on the rifle. The rifle sure went to a good home.
Thanks for the share,
Don

RustyYep, Jens! I confess! I have a Winchester Model 63 autoloader 22 LR that I shot my first rabbit with, out of the back end of a 49 Willis Jeep!
There is just something about walking across West Texas Mesquite prairie with your 22 LR and blue jean pockets stuffed with rounds! I miss shooting jackrabbits!
