Re: Which is your fav 30 cal magnum
I own two 300 mag's. The first is a meat gun, a rebarreled Mod. 700 in a 300WM, with a 4X12 Lepold and a HS Precision stock. It has a habit of putting 165gr. Nosler Par. where the cross hairs are when the trigger breaks. The other is a Mod 70 Super Grade Classic in a 300 RUM, after bedding the action and a trigger job it shoots inside 3" @ 300yds..

I have a 300 WIN MAG and a 300 RSAUM. I have taken exactly one animal with each - an impala with 300 WM and a whitetail doe with 300 RSAUM. Based on that unstatistically valid sample I don't like either for Deer sized animals. The tissue damage was, in my opinion, excessive. Both shots were 100 yds or less and the bullits left grapefruit sized exit holes. I am intrigued by the 300 H&H and could talk myself into one in pre 64 Mod 70.

TerryR, I would suggest using a different bullet. Niether round should leave "grapefruit" sized holes in game.

I'm going to toss my vote in here for the 30-338. It is basically the ballistic twin to the 308 Norma, and My M70 with it's custom barrel makes 3150 with the 180 Partition, and 3005 with the 200 P. I would happily take on anything in North America with this rifle, since it is a true tackdriver, often delivering groups around 1" at 200 meters, when I do my part.It has taken everything from elk through Bison without ever needing a second shot. A 7' Black bear took a 200 Partition at around 240 meters, never even moved out of his tracks. I have yet to recover a Partition from game shot with this rifle. Regards, Eagleye.
