dogcatPoof!- Turn your .300 win mag into a ....
Assume, you were given a .300 win mag in new model 70, but had several already - Assume you were not budget constrained.
What would you do with it? What great round could you turn it into?
Dream big here....

DigitalDanUse it for a down stroke on a nice CRF .338, or .375 H&H...or actually I'd suggest a .416 Rigby.
If yuro'e corseseyd and dsyelixc can you siltl raed oaky?

SnowwolfeDo a few minor mods to the action so it will handle a longer cartridge and rechamber it to 300 Ultramag.

JarrodWhat are the stats on the 425 Express?
"Science only goes so far then God takes over."
I'd pull the magazine block, fit a sporter weight 26 inch 300 H&H barrel, attach a fixed rear sight and a barrel band front, smooth the action, tune the trigger, install a VX3 1.75-6x in Talley QDs, give the works a touch of engraving here and there, color case harden appropriate parts, fire blue the screws, rust blue the rest, have a look at the wood but probably end up replacing it...otherwise I'd leave it pretty much as is. Good hunting!

Look here.I'm not endorsing the data, just giving you the link. Caveat Emptor. Trust but Verify. Use at your own risk. Objects in mirror are closer than they appear.

ConI'd most likely build a 358Norma or 416Taylor if in that position... 411 Bowman (411/338) if I really wanted something different.
Cheers...

McCrayWhen Southwest Shooters in OKC went TU. I picked the SuperGrade with the best wood and rebuilt it into a 8mm Rem Mag.
Lengthened the top opening, replaced the mag box, follower, ejector and bolt stop with factory pieces and the bottom metal and extractor with Williams parts. The barrel is a PacNor finished at 26 inches.
I'm happy.

Mark DobrenskiSam dunk 4 me, I would put on a 4.5 weight Schneider and cut it to 25".
Chambered for the 340 Wby without freebore.

Thomas Jones! would have to chose based on the type of hunting i would be doing. If deer and antilope were on my ticket, I think the .264 win mag would get the nod, but if I were going for bigger stuff , a 358 norma or a 338 win would do. If Africa or alaskan grizly were on the menueI might got for a .458 win...tj3006

dogcatIs a .404 Jeffery or a Saeed .375/.404 an option with this base rifle and action?

HamishGidday Dogcat,
264 Winmag only way to go for deer/antelope through to Plains Game. If it were me I would broach no argument on the matter.
Happy Hunting

waterratAlmost 15 yrs ago I had my 300 win mag rebarreled to the 425 express and am much impressed with the result. It'll shoot 400grs at 2400fps but as mine is pretty lite I use 350 barnesX at 2350. Cases are easily formed from 300win mags as A-square cases are pretty spendy. IMR 4895 is easy to use and is all you need for the 425. As barnes discontinued the 350 I'll be trying 380 Northforks next. Jim

Art S.Hands down, the 416 Taylor. It duplicates or slightly betters 404 Gibbs ballistics and approaches factory Rigby ballistics. I have played with the 425 Express and 425 Westley Richards, but bullet selection is just much better in 416.
As an aside, I have found recoil with the Taylor to be much softer than with the Rigby, I think because the powder charge is so much less.

IdahoVandalI would make it a 9.3mm DGW (.416 Rigby necked down to .366) or a 9.3mm RUM....
