hoppes-no9need load for 275gr Hornady in 35 Whelen
I recently picked up 3 full boxes of the old Hornady 275gr RN and need starting and max loads for my 700BDL in 35 Whelen. Powders I have on hand are Re-15 and H4350, but I'm happy to try others.
BTW, somebody scored 10 boxes of these bullets on eBay a couple of weeks ago -- they went for over $25 per box, which was too rich for my blood considering that modern premium bullets are not much more than that. But I did buy three boxes at $20 each, just to try them -- and I have to admit, that 275gr RN looks like a damn freight train, and I bet it hits like one too....

In P.O. Ackley's Handbooks, he noted these loads with OLD powders for the 275 grainers:
49 gr. 3031 = 2320 fps
53 gr. 4064 = 2370 fps
53 gr. 4320 = 2310 fps
With H4350, being slower than 4320, I think a REALLY safe max load would be 53 grains. Compare these early loads to current powder burn rate charts, and you could get a decent idea of where you should be.
Gee wiz, I wish I had a box to try.

N E 450 No2From Nick Harvey's book.
35 Whelen, 275 gr bullet
Starting load 51 gr RL 15 2240fps.
Max load 55 gr RL 15 2400fps.
Of all the powders RL 15 showed the highest velocity by 50 fps.
Rifle was a Remington 700 Classic, Reminton cases, 9 1/2 primer.
USE MAXIMUM LOADS WITH CAUTION
Hope this helps.

BigBulletNo-9,
I was preparing for a black bear hunt over bait and thought these 275 gr Hornandys would be perfect.
My best loads were;
60.0 gr IMR 4350 @ 2125fps
54.0 gr IMR 4320 @ 2230fps
62.0 gr H4350 @ 2100fps
None of these loads were even close to max in my rifles, though I think you'd be hard pressed to get anymore then 62.0 grains of powder into a case. I believe that when I go back to this, I will try the Reloader 15 starting at 52.0 grains
I should work with them some more, but found some 300 gr Barnes Origionals that I used instead.
Good shooting,
BigBullet

BarstoolerFrom the original Hornady handbook, 1967 -- with 1967 type powders:
Rifle: 1903 Springfield
Barrel: 22 1/2
Cases: military brass necked up
Primer: Federal 210
Bullet: Hornady 275gr Round Nose
PowderType/startgrs/startvel/max grs/max velocity
IMR3031/41gr/1900fps/48.8gr/2300fps
IMR4064/44gr/1900fps/51.6/2300fps
IMR4895/43.8gr/1900fps/52.0gr/2300fps
IMR4320/44.4gr/1900fps/52.6gr/2300fps
BL-C2/48.4gr/2100fps/53.1gr/2300fps
H380/46.9gr/2000fps/55.1gr/2300fps
IMR4350/51.4gr/2000fps/56.6gr/2200fps
Since 1967, like all reloading manuals, Hornady has "toned down" their recommended max loads, but you are probably safe to use the "start" load here if you use other an GI brass that Hornady tested with.
