ceweRem 700 Police
I just bought a Rem 700P, a friend of mine has one and it is a tackdriver. Anyone here have any experience with this gun in .308? I might rebarrel to 6.5/284...

DoglegMine is a .300 Win, and had some issues. It had only one lug bearing and a deep 3/16" wide ring just in front of the throat. It shot MOA like that, which wasn't good enough for my use so I rebarrelled it and cleaned the action up a bit.
The clean up was bad enough that we had to move the bolt handle forward to get the primary extraction back. Then the extractor broke.
It shoots now, but it turned into an expensive donor. Probably just bad luck.

perryI have 2 and love them both. I used them as is for a couple of years then started tweeking things on them. Fast action bolt handle, blue printed the action, Sako extr., etc.
Both shoot like the target above and did before we started messing with it.
I have 3 friends that got them and they all shoot well and have been very reliable.

ceweThanks for the feedback and sorry that I haven´t been around.
I haven´t had a a chance to try the rifle but Í´ll be doing that on Sunday. I´ll only use Sako Trainers so I can get some brass and a general idea on how it shoots. Do you guys have any special loads that you can recommend and/or bullet weights for optimal use beyond 300m?
I bought a Meopta Tactical scope for it, 4-14 with Mildot. I haven´t used the Mildot system before but MAYBE I can learn how it works

Cheers and have a nice weekend.

butchloci have one that i restocked quite a while ago. it is a very accurate 308. not unusual to shoot a 5 shot group at 200 with all shots touching

GeedubyaI've had two, a 300 RUM and a 308 Win.
boringly accurate.
I now have none.
Others desired to pay me significantly more than what I had paid, to be bored by the accuracy of these two rifles.

Then it's time to move the target further out, until it's no longer boring. Let me guess, you couldn't find a long enough range to make them less boring?

GeedubyaNo,
I'm just a gun whore.
So many rifles, so little time!

Where did you get the replacement stock Butch?
I know of a Cooper in 6mmPPC that would be perfect were it not for the stock.
All the gunsmiths over here have turned up blank, barring a bespoke wooden stock at several time the value of the rifle....

Alberta CanuckI had one in .308. It was so boringly accurate I never got around to selling it. Still have it in the vault.
For a factory rifle, it is too boring for its own good. As it is, I am always taking other rifles to the range, testing to see if the latest "trick" has worked in trying to make them as good as that Remington PSS came from the factory.
So the PSS, poor thing, almost never gets taken out any more.
Mine, BTW, loves just about any reputable make of 168 gr. BTM bullets, propelled by either Winchester or Federal primers, and about 40-41 grs. of anything around 4895's burn rate...I mostly use plain vanilla IMR 4895, or Vihtavouri N-135.
I know....that's what pretty much everyone uses in their .308 match guns....boring, isn't it?

N E 450 No2I have seen several hundred Rem 700 Heavy barreled guns, they used to call them the varmint model, before they made the Police version. I have never seen one that did not shoot pretty good, some are acceptional.
Here in the states the most populatr load is the Federal Match 168 gr load. Some use the Remington, Winchester, or Black Hills 168gr load.
Several years ago I changed my people over to the Winchester 168gr Ballistic Silvertips. They shot just as good as Federsl match and give a lot better terminal performance.
All of these loads are good to 800 yards even in 20" barreled guns.
Usually they go subsonic after 800 yards and do not do well most of the time at 1000.
The Federal 175gr load does good to 1000.
Since you are in Europe you might be able to fine some Hertenburg [sp?] 190 gr Match ammo, it is excellent ammo.
Also I have shot Quite a variety of RUAG Military/Police 223, 308 and 300 Win Mag ammo.
Their "stuff" is excellent. They make several different bullets that shoot to the same point of impact. Check their stuff out.
These loads shoot great

MongoYep< I have an LTR in .308, out of the box brillian-one ragged hole at 100 and was the first gun i used when I started into 1000yd benchrest. with handloads( 175 bergers or 178 A-max and a slightly over saami charge of VV N150) it has shot 10 round groups of just over 9 inches. Yeah almost boring, but a great reference for me if I cant tell weather I'm having a bad day or one of my other projects is acting up. k
