which one would you choose (and why) ??

I am going to buy a new rifle, cal .300 Win Mag ... My choice has to de done in between a Winchester model 70 XTR or a Ruger M 77 stainless.

Accuracy is just outstanding in both models, so my decision has to be taken based only in these two models pros and cons ...

Which one would you choose and why ?

Unless you want to pay a fortune for the "No longer made" Winchesters I would choose the Ruger.
The Ruger is ss, controlled round feed, and it comes with rings and built in mounts. Only disadvantage is it will be heavier than a Win 70.

If I had my choice I would take the Winchestr because I like the trigger and safety better than on the Ruger. However as was stated above the Winchester may now prove prohibitive in price compared to the Ruger.

The Ruger.

Not only are the prices jacked sky high on the Winchesters but I wouldn't want a rifle built by some worker who KNOWS he's about to be unemployed.

Of those two choices no contest, the Ruger.

Given the track record of each, I'd go Win 70.

The Win has an easy trigger to adjust and is known for being pretty accurate.

W/ the Ruger it's a gamble whether it will shoot or not, may be a MOA gun or may be a 3MOA gun, never know til you shoot them.

You have stated that accuracy is just outstanding on both rifles. That being the case I would take the Ruger.Controlled feed not push feed as is the XTR, the Ruger rings are very solid . I assume you are going to hunt with this rifle so the stainless never hurts. Ruger all the way.

Go with the Winchester, buy it used and get a good deal. I have more bad to say about Ruger than good for Winchester. The Ruger safety is horrible. You can't get on it easy enough. The ruger triggers are the worst system I have ever dealt with. They are crappy to begin with and hard to adjust. Also, it might be handy to get the rings with the ruger but for a 40mm objective they are usually too high. As for the controlled feed, who cares. I have three Remingtons and have never had any feeding issues on the ranger or in the field. Pull the bolt all the way back and push it all the way forward and you will have no problem with feeding the winchester.

Yeah, what he said! Your Ruger MAY shoot well, and it may not. I've got one of each!

Go with a used Winchester, or even a new one.

Heck, you and I found out about the closing at the same time the factory dudes did.

I would look for a Super Grade made in the '90s. They feel much better to me than the Ruger and are well made, good looking, and good shooting rifles.

Keep in mind I own a Winchester M70 XTR in 300 WM and a Ruger M77 S/S in 338. Will grab the Tikka before the other 2 everytime. The Tikka is the most accurate gun I have ever owned(except for my Weatherby Mark V in 270 it is just as accurate as my Tikka)

Either is a good choice, but the M77 Ruger has acquired a good reputation in Alaska for ruggedness..... And AK can give you some of the worst possible conditions on this planet!
