Dave BushSo I am going to go .338-06
Don:
Save yourself all the trouble and just buy a new Ruger chambered in .338 Ruger Compact magnum. It is basically a short action 338/06 and it is available in blued or stainless with a 20 or 22 inch barrel. With a 22 inch barrel, it nips at the heels of a .338 Win mag. Mine is blued with a 20 inch barrel and will shoot a 225 grain bullet at 2600 fps. It is short, light and handy and a joy to carry.

AtkinsonI'm and ex 338-06 fan..I found out that I could do the same thing with a .338 Win. by loading it down and in the same action and same barrel length..but after shooting the .338 for awhile I wonder why I ever wanted a 338-06 in the first place, same thing with the 9.3x62 it just out performed the .338-06..All this is not to say te 338-06 is not a great caliber, it is and I had good luck on game with it, but the options are better, both on paper and in the field.
My .338 Win today is a Ruger 77 African model and its one of the nicest factory rifles I have seen since the pre 64 win fwt...It and my 9.3x62 Huskvarna (1930) are the only factory bolt actions I own as I build my own rifles..
Just one mans opinnion.

DWrightI'm actually getting more velocity with my .338-06 AI then I did with my Win mag. The .338-06 AI crossed the crono at 2,749 fps. with a 250 gr. Sierra.
No need to burn 10-12 gr. more powder to get velocity.

Wonder what pressure that load is generating.

DWrightWell, I'm getting no high pressure signs with case expansion, or flattened primers, and using less powder then what the books call for. 2 grains less then Elmer Keiths load with the standard .338 OKH. I am running a 25" Keiger barrel, but either way my .338-06 is producing .338 mag velocites with less powder.
So don't understand why I would go back to the mag. My recoil is also less because of the reduced powder weight.
Personally I think the .338-06 is probably THE best caliber ever designed on the 06 case.
