What velocities should I expect w/9.3x62 loads?
Finally seem to have a scope/mount combo (Talley rings/Leupold 3-9 Compact) that will actually hang together on my 9.3x62, CZ 550, or, at least it HAS for one range session.

I'm curious what velocities I should expect from the 23.6" barrel on the 550 for 232 Oryx's; 250 Nosler B-Tips and 270 Speers. I'm using Lapua brass and WLR primers.

So far, using 58 I4895, I've gotten 2600 FPS with the 232's, and 2450 FPS with 56 grains of the same powder and the 250 B-Tip. Accuracy has ranged from good to outstanding.

With 270's, using 58 H414/W760 and 56 R15, velocities have been way down, in the 2200 range. Obviously, there's a lot of work to do here.

I'm not trying to make it into a 375 H&H, I'm just wondering what to expect.

I use Lapua brass, WLR primers, norma Oryx/vulkan 232gr and 59gr of VVN135 for 2600fps and sub inch accuracy out of my 23.5/24" lothar walther 14 twist barrel

60gr gives 2650fps with the Oryx but the zero is higher than the vulkan load and I am a conservative sort so 59gr it is. This slightly lower pressure than the Norma factory load (according to VV e mail) so I'm happy.

I struggle to get 2,300fps with the 286gr partition only by 2gr over nosler book max with VVN140. Accuracy isn't as good and as I don't like max loads I don't bother.

The speer I use 58gr of VVN140 for 2,400fps. Recoil is such that I don't want to go more.

I've been loading 9.3x62 with IMR 4064, based on Ken Waters' Pet Loads data. My range results were very much in line with his data, which were developed on a Husqvarna Mauser.

In my Blaser's 23.6" barrel, I got best accuracy with 286-grain Nosler Partitions using 55 grains for 2250 fps (1-1/16" group at 100 yards).

The Speer 270s were much less accurate in the Blaser (group sizes at 100 yards approaching 3") and, suprisingly, showed lower velocities than the 286-gr NPs with the same powder charges of IMR 4064.

RW -
I have the same make/model CZ550 and have had zero scope problems with Talley rings and a Leupold 2.5-8 scope. Also used the factory CZ rings at first with no problems.

I've tried the Speer 270-gr, Barnes 250-gr X, Nosler 250-gr Ballistic Tip and 286-gr Partitions. I will shamelessly admit to copying loads from Ray Atkinson and Pygmy (if my memory is correct) who had good luck with Reloader 15. Worked up slowly to the loads listed below with zero indications of any problem. All loads use WLR primers in Norma 9.3x62 cases.

Speer - good accuracy but not great; did not chrono the loads.

Barnes X - good accuracy with most 3-shot groups at or a little above 1 inch at 100 yds off the bench. Chrono 2,510 fps with 59.0-gr of Re15.

Nosler Partition - very good accuracy with most groups around one inch and a couple of .5 inch groups. Chrono 2,420 fps with 59.0-gr of Re15. Used this load on plains game in Zimbabwe this summer and it just flat worked.

Nosler Ballistic Tip - best overall accuracy with a farily high percentage of .75 inch or lower 3-shot groups. This load can do legitimate .5 inch groups when I'm having a good day. Chrono 2,550 with 58.0-gr of Re15.

I suspect the rifle could safely squeeze out a bit more speed, but I haven't pushed it.

I want to try the 232-gr Oryx's - where did you get yours???

I stoke my 9.3x62 with more H4895 than you (by a lot); however, the manuals for the most part take into consideration the old M96 rifles that were chambered in this round. A good, recent M98 should be capable of more pressure (270Win).

I have used both WinLMR and FC 210M. Both are very accurate. I have used Lapau and Norma cases. I have used H4895 for the 250BT, 286Partition, 286 Lapua, 270Speer; and H4350 with the Barnes 286 solid.

I get 2400 fps with the Barnes and 4350; I get 2500 with the 270 Speer; and 2600fps with the 250 Partition. I've never used the 232 bullet. I need to refigure my loads and adjust down perhaps, but I have experienced no problems working up to these loads slowly. Ku-dude

Phil - Thanx for the info. The old memory's a little fuzzy, but, the 232's came from either Graf's or Huntington's (trying to nudge the gray matter into activity, here, I think they were around $35.00/100).

Ku-dude - The lot of 4895 I'm using is, for whatever reason, a little hotter than normal. I've noticed higher velocities with less of it in all the rifles I've tried it in (223, 308 and 358) than the previous lot gave. Got it from gibrass.com, it's "recently manufactured", whatever that means. Definitely got some juice to it, though.

I haven't worked with R-15 that much, yet. It's supposed to be the king of powders for the 9.3x62; kind of saving the best for last.

I use 56.5 to 59 grs. of RL-15 in my 9.3x62's, depending on the bullet used...I get 2520 with a 286 gr. Nosler, 2450 with a 320 gr. Woodleigh, near 2500 with a 300 gr. Swift and about 2700 plus with the 250 gr. Nosler Balistic tip, but I also shoot a fast 26" barrel....I have also had good velocity and accuracy with the H414 powder. I am getting good case life and trimming about every 4 or 5 shootings..All these loads are max or near max.

I suspect that you could subtract 100 FPS for a 22" barrel....dunno.

I got 2287 with 54.6 gr Norma 201 with NP 286gr. It is accurate and effective. Rifle is a CZ550 24.5" bbl. I don't see the need for "express velocity" loads with this round. The sectional density makes it very effective at lower speeds.

Dr. Duc,
Have you used it in game at slightly excellerated velocity such as I use???

with my cz 500 lux, using 57.0gns 4895 and 64.0gns 4350 behind those 270 gr speers, i'm down in the 2300 fps range, although accuracy is surprizingly good.

Curtis,
The speer 270 gr. bullets are soft as marshmellow and come apart on everything I ever shot with them at over 2200 FPS M.V.,

Just for your information, and for what its worth..

i think i have to move up to 286 grainers....

Ray - Have you ever used 286 Partitions? If so, how did they work?
