I would like your opinion on choice of rings and mounts for my new Win 70 Featherweight 6.5X55 Stainless. I had a set of Leupold's installed at the dealer, I don't like em. They are Rev. frt & rear, don't need the rev. style.

If you are going to install the scope your self, you should spend the money you save and get one of those neat kits that let you match up the rings. I got one a couple of years ago, and use it. It makes it easy, reduces marks on the scope and you get a professional job. About $25 at Midway.

I like the Leupold quick off, quick on bases, however, you have rings all you need are bases. I'd order the standard two piece or even once piece base, and use the rings you have. check on line with Midway, MidSouth, and Graf and see who has the best price. They'll be at your door by week's end. Kudude

If you want the standard type with the wihdage screw rear like you have, Luepold is the best, get the centered front if you want, Or try some Redfield bases with those luepold rings. Redfield will have a centered rear base and front and redfeild are nice bases.

Or get some Talleys for more money, Or some Warne ,kinda like talley except they are alittle bulkyer than talley but cheaper.

Heres a picture of Redfield bases on a mauser. I think the M70 rear would be like this too.

Get a pair of Talley rings and bases if you haven't tried them before. They are just high quality simple system bases and rings, vertically split rings. don't need to lap them, they lock up tight and just don't go anywhere! Opinions will vary of course, but I like the way the look also.

The talleys would definately look nice, especially if you got em engraved, case hardened, nitre blued(pick one).

For a lightweight, Talley machined aluminum mounts are hard to beat.

They are priced right, feather light and as strong as any made.

Talleys are absolutely the best I've got. Warne or Weaver style second, Leupold dual dovetail next (especially if you want extension rings to move the scope back for eye relief), and standard Leupold or Redfield with the windage screws dead last.

I agree with this ranking 100%.

All my scoped centerfire rifles wear Warne Maximas, only because Talleys require their own base and I prefer the MIL-STD-1913 interface.

Good observation HP. The Talleys are more of a "classic" type look, and anything that goes on a 1913 rail is utilitarian, and depending on the layout of the rifle does not go with the flow. For instance, I have a set of 50BMG rings on a M24 rail mounted on a "stereotypical" safari rile with a barrel band front swivel mount, and a banded front sight. Works? Hell yea! pretty? Hell no!!

Well, Warned Maximas and Burris Zee rings are MIL-STD-1913 compatible but look very non-military. If you used a two piece 1913 base, such as those made by Leupold, Nightforce, or Ken Farrell, it might not even raise an eyebrow in front of the ring snob set.

If you want a reasonably priced hell-for-strong mount system, look at the Leupold PRW system. This has weaver style bases with fixed rings.

The PRW/QRW ring design is flawed, IMO. It is impossible to slip the top half of the ring over the scope body without scratching it all to hell, and once tightened, the bottom of the top half digs into the scope body.

BTDT, not buying them again. That's why I tried Warne, and am MUCH happier.

I think this thread supports a point I've been trying to make to the super nice folks at Talley Mfg., that if they made a weaver base compatible ring they'd sell a bunch of them.
