for hunting, if I hunted mostly deer and sometimes elk, I'd lean toward the 7Mag. If I were mostly an elk hunter with an occasional deer, I'd go with the 300. But I'd be ok with either.

This is not fun to me.....7-08 vs .308....280 vs 30-06....now 7 RM vs .300 WM.....I'll pass.

A 180 Berger at 3000 fps in the 7mm wins for long range shooting.

300 Win Mag with 208 grain Amax at 2900 fps is pretty close to it though!

I'll play. For larger game @ 400+, 300wm. For deer size game @ 400+, 7rm. Under 400, doesn;t matter much, but for bigger game, tough to beat bigger bullets @ any range. FWIW, I am not a fan of the 300WM.

I like them both and use both. In a light carry gun for walking in places that are more up and down than acrossed, the 7mm. If I have to reach out and touch something big at distance, the .300 WM. It really dosen't make that big a difference it's just another excuse to own another gun.....Tom

I don't understand the argument for one vs the other at longer range. The 7mm and 300 are virtually the same in energy.

The .300 Winny won 75% of the 1000 yard matchs for a long time. I guess all those shooters were aware of the 7mm mag. I wonder why they picked the Winny. Good shooting.

Depends on the intended creature.

Frankly I have a 7mmRem Mag that I jokingly refer to as the rifle that's built to out 25-06 a 25-06.

My brother was so proud when he got his 257wby...

I shoot 120's at speeds a 25-06 can't shoot 100's at

It was my ultimate answer for the people who insist on using a "Corvette" cartridge like a 25-05 to launch a "house trailer" 120gr bullet at speeds a 30-06 can beat with 165's

a 7mmMag with 120's is suitable for deer or 'lopes.

And if you are someone who'd shoot an Elk with a 257wby
loaded with 120's the 7mag would probably do that job better as well.

Probably because "for a long time" 30 caliber was the cartridge most companies devoted match bullets to, lol.

The bullet companies seem to sell what the public orders, and always will, lol. Good shooting.

For the the big game hunter you would be hard pressed to be able to tell the difference in the field. So guys like 30 cal bullets and others like 7mm Bullets either way 95 % of the worlds big game would not know the difference. The other 5% well you would need a cartridge with a bigger bore than 308, just to be legal. So its really a well I Have nothing to do but hear myself type kind of thing.

I like the he 7mm RM over the 3oo WM, but I like the 300 WBY better than the 7mm RM. Just personal preference, no practical reasons. Truth be told, I am not a 30 cal fan, but I found a nice Fibermark (McMillan stock) in 300 WBY that fills the hole in my line up. If I could swap it for an identical rifle in 340 WBY, I'd do it in a heartbeat. jumping

7mm 180 Berger VLD @ 3000 fps

1000 yard:
Drop-22.9 moa
Drift-4.9 moa

.308 210 Berger VLD @ 2900 fps

1000 yard:
Drop-25.2 moa
Drift-5.4 moa

The advantage may be small, but the 7mm bullet DOES shoot inside the 300. I'm not saying the 300 is a slouch at all, but it gets beat.

I own 3 7rms and 3 300Mags, it's a toss up.

I grab a 7rm for most hunts, so I'd have to lean to the 7rm as my favorite.

A 160 NAB at 3080-3100 fps is hard to beat for NA hunting.
