7x57Rate of Twist for a 300 H&H
I have an Interarms Whitworth 375 H&H that I am thinking of having rebarreled to a 300 H&H. What rate of twist would be best for 150 grain and up bullets. What barrel lenght and what contour would be best. I will use the rifle for whitetails and hopefully elk one day. (Kentucky elk) I walk and still hunt most of the time, I have only taken two deer from a tree stand one with a bow and one with a rifle. Will I have any feeding problems going from the 375 to the 300. Thank you, Bryan

KWard1 in 10 and 26" is what my model 70 has a factory barrel. likes most .30 cal bullets

El DeguelloI would make mine 1/10", but if you use 180-grain bullets or lighter, a 1/12 is plenty (I once used 220-grain round-nose bullets in a per-64 M70 FWT in .308 Win. that had a 1/12" twist, and it shot them very well with 48 grains of N205: MV 2300 FPS)
I doubt that you'll have any feeding problems, but this si something you can test NOW by running a few .300 H&H rounds through your rifle's action. The .375 H&H's chamber should accept them easily enough!

vapodogMine is 1-10 and I'd not change it if I was rebarreling.

7x57thank you, to all that replied. Should I go with a #2 contour or a #2 1/2? Bryan

I'd be aiming for an 8-1/2 lb rifle ready to hunt. That'll probably mean a #2 profile. Getting the right barrel profile that will fit the existing stock is a major consideration. If you're wedded to the 375 stock, you'll end up with a heavy barrel for a 300.
BTW, 1 in 10 twist is just the cat's meow for the 300 H&H. Also, keep in mind that brass availability is a problem with this cartrige; stock up when you can.
One other thing - I'd probably ditch the rebarrel idea and just buy a 300 Win Mag instead. I know where you can get a NIB Witworth Mark X barreled action in 300 Win Mag for $450. You could sell your 375 and put the money into stocking the 300WM barreled action.
Send me a PM if you're interested in the action (it's not mine).
