BighornBreathBrake ?
I was wondering the price range for muzzle breaks? And would like some opinions on which is best? My son is in need of a big game rifle soon and I was thinking 270 or 270 WSM. He is very intolerant of recoil from a gun larger thank a 223. Thanks in advance.

Ed ScarboroI have several with Viaz brakes. I'm not sure what they cost now. I think I paid about $165 installed. They tend to throw the noise out away from the shooter compared to the old Boss brake on Winchesters and Brownings.

AtkinsonThey have helped a lot of shooters become better shots for sure..Some whiners complain about the noise and you will hear all sorts of BS about that..Tell them to stick there fingers in there ears, thats exactly why God gave hunters fingers, well that and to eat meat with.

Have your son shoot a couple of shots off hand without the brake on every shooting session after he is comfortable with the brake. Use ear protection and your goal is to hunt without the brake.
Another alternative depending on game being hunted is a lighter caliber like a 250-3000. but that depends on his age and ability.
All brakes work on the same principle. I would pick one with clean lines that match the barrel contour. Its just a matter of displacing forced air. the KDF is still a good choice and they all run about $200 with a thread protector to put on the threads when hunting.

lavacaIMHO, muzzle brakes are a lot like children. Loud, obnoxious, and to be avoided at all costs.

Reminds me of my next door neighbor, ret Col U.S. Army and Vietnam Vet. I asked how things were, he said "Life is good, kids are grown up and out of the house, the pets are dead ..."
lol!

Tapper2As Atkinson said "All brakes are about the same" they all work and they are all loud. The Vias might be a little less noisy and it doesn't reduce recoil quite as much. I install mostly Harrell Precision brakes. I charge $110 for the brake and cap installed. In my opinion they are to loud to hunt with. Have your son try shooting a 7-08 as it will take everything in N.A. and most plains game in Africa. Make sure the stock fits as this is the reason for much of the pain of recoil. There are other rifles that are low recoil, but proven killers. The 257 Roberts, 260 Remington, 250-3000, 30-30 all excellent deer rifles with very little recoil...........Tom

BiebsPhil at KDF does a nice job on brakes, especially the Slimline, that matches the barrel contour and has the lines of very small holes.

Not really. I have one that reduces muzzle blast considerably and reduces recoil tenfold - well, a huge amount anyway. It might not be legal in your parts. I call it a suppressor-break and it is not large.
This is the small one.
This is my larger one which is more effective in both recoil reduction
and noise reduction.
This is what's inside the larger one - nothing! The working bit is what goes in the end.
Both are very short with an inch increase in overall length. But they do have suppressor qualities .
