help with pre war winchester value
Hi all,

Can someone help with a value guess here:

1937 Winchester Super Grade 270. Griffin and Howe side mount. Bluing missing from floorplate mostly but rest of bluing is good. has a swivel on the barrel for sling. front ramped sight. original grip cap. original plastic buttpad in bad shape.

mechanically excellent. also is missing rear sight element although the dogknot is there and it is dovetailed for a sight. has what appears to be a lyman peep sight set into the left receiver wall but the actual sight bar is missing. has the pre war safety which is backward to the current in function.

I know pretty vague without pics. Asking price including and old scope in the mount with a single post is $899. Isn't the side mount alone worth more?

the side mount is not, by most, considered a plus.

Anything except honest wear and tear subtracts from the value. Just be happy they did not cut the original butt stock an inch or two and stick one of those butt-ugly ventilated orange pads on it.

That said, almost any decent (mechanically) OM 70 is worth the asking price you mentioned. Sounds like a great shooter, or the basis for a custom.

I would definitely buy it if I were you...

Buy it. It is easily worth that money.

If its a Griffen and Howe side mount its worth the price of the rifle at G&H then another $400 to install...

Mod. 70 pre 64s with side mount holes deduct the value, the same complete with mounts and even a scope add value to collectable mod. 70s in most cases, but there are exceptions..Its pretty tricky stuff, unless you keep up to date.

One thing for sure a 1937 Super gread with a bent barrel is worth $2500 at worst..$899 is a steal, and the buyer should be arrested for theft.

Not even close to factory original price either! I agree with what was said, it is worth $899 if the barrel is bent!

Without pics its hard to say, but my thinking was that the swivel is one of those attached with a screw and will come right off; the plastic butt is incorrect but can be corrected with a proper recoil pad; Floor plate should say Super Grade: It appears to be perhaps a parts gun, but for $899 it could be transformed into a beautiful hunting rifle worth a bundle..G&H charges about $1400 to sell and install the side mount. Go figure!
