I need the help of some people who can answer a question for me, I am looking at trying my hand at some long range shooting (Not hunting just steel plates) and I was curious what everyones thoughts were on which of the following rounds would get me out to 1500 - 1800 yards and still be supersonic? I have my 1000 yard 308 but it well pretty much runs out of steam around 800 - 900 and goes subsonic around 1200 I think, I was looking at either the 300 Win Mag or the 300 RUM both will have muzzle breaks due to the lovely recoil of these cannons, opinions are very welcome, thanks

338 Lapua or .50bmg is what you need

Yes those would be great! one issue I don't think I can use the Lapua in comp, and the 50BMG well I can't afford to feed that thing! The largest round I can use that I'm aware of is the 300RUM, I see where they are hitting steel @ 2000 yards with the RUM but I would like to get to a mile and I think that if I need to later down the road I can rechamber and get a new barrel using the 300 Win or RUM actions to 338 Lapua. Thank for the advice.

.338 Lapua was the 1st round that came to my mind. I have shot a few, NOT at the distances you mention, but at 400-500 yds. They ARE impressive. Unfortunately unless braked they tend to be impressive on BOTH ends. Braked, or in a fairly heavy rifle, one should be liveable.

If you can get a 240g SMK to group well out of your RUM, it'll push it out at about 2850.
While not supersonic, it will still be sauntering along at about 1025 fps at 2k. That's pretty close, depending on how tall you are. If you're building from scratch, put a 30" tube on it, get +100 fps at the muzzle, +50 fps at 2k.
I bet your 308 W goes sub before 1k.

IF YOU want the BEST long range tactical cartridge you would want the .408 Cheyenne.

Doesn't require a rifle the size of a .50 but will stay supersonic to about 3000+ yards, depending on the load and bullet.

During development testing there have been 5" groups at 1800yds.
