Fan300mag270WBY or 7mm STW
hello
I have a rifle weatherby mark v cal 270wby, made in Japan, so, I used it a lot, and now the barrel already needs to be changed; now the situation is: repeat the cal. 270wby or change of cal. 7mm STW.
My 270wby using powder 7828 and 130grs nosler bt, it gets 3400-3450fps, with very good precision.
So the 7mm STW using 140grs nosler bt and powder 7828, gave me almost the same velocity 3400-3450fps. but with almost 8,0 grs more of powder.
now the cal. 7mm has the advantage to use bullets as heavies as the 175grs and the 270 has the 160grs, but i use the rifles for mountain hunting, for which the weight of the bullets to use rank in cal. 7mm of the 140-154grs and in the 270 of 130-140grs,
now I had stored cases, bullets and powder to use in the two calibers, alone serious question to define for which caliber???.
the rifles that at present have are: 240wby, 257roberts, 257wby, 270/243imp, 300wby and 340wby.
the rifle will be used when not require the 300wby and seek something more of impact that the 257wby, as for example in coues deer hunting,
I expect its comments
Best regards

Tapper2I would rebarrel it in .270 Wby. Not enough difference to go to the 7mm STW. You can by .270 Wby ammo if you need too.....Tom

<Mike McGuire>Whatever your personal preference is.
If your 270 Wby is an original Mark V then a couple of things will need to be done to make it a 7mm STW.
1) The slot on the bottom of the bolt needs to be lengthened.
2) The magazine will have a block that needs to be removed. However, I am not sure if that will result in the same magazine as used for the longer catridges such as the 300 Wby or 7mm STW. The feeding in Mark V Wbys is completely controlled by the magazine box.

True dat!
The STW round will require lengthing of the magazine and I'd not go that route unless your 'smith says he has done it and will stand behind his work
In truth....there's nothing wrong with the 7mm Remington Magnum and it's a better round than the Weatherby as it just is more available and costs less. The STW isn't very far ahead of it in velocity as well. All in all the Rem Mag gets my vote for a rebarreling.

hello
As your now in mexico and all the world, after september 11, all change.
is really dificul almost imposible to get reloading material in mexico, so i had all for a 7mm STW and 270WBY.
Also my smith dot have a proble to open de box magazine and make the rifle funtional, always do that on alot of guns.
so, the real mater is the caliber, 270wby or 7mm STW, in mexico two hunters tellme
firts said, go for the weatherby, factory ammo realy good, less expensive to reload than the 7mm STW, and it kills all mountain game, wiht less recoil.
the other hunter said.
7mm it has more frontal area more impact, more demage at the organis, more lethal.
less wind desviation, but more recoil that the weatherby, case easy to get using 300wby, & 300h&h cases that are easy to get in mexico. and i had alot.
So i thinking to do a 7mm STW, because i like so much the 300wby and the 7mm STW is realy close in performance.
So I´ll wait for your coments
best regards

MTMThe 270 WBY is a great round, I've had a couple. However it's way too small for the MK V action. I currently shoot 160s at 3300 in my STW. Great mountain game gun. The 300 WBY is for 200s at 3100 fps. and big animals, the STW with 160s is a Deer lazer.

<Mike McGuire>It seems components for reloading are yor main issue but you are all set for 300 Wby brass.
In terms of components one thing to think about with the 7mm STW is powder choice if you wish to get top velocity from heavier bullets.
If you have good barrel availability then one option might be to do another 300 Wby but with either a 1 in 12 or 1 in 14 twist barrel and shoot lighter lighter bullets from 150-165, although 11 in 12 is fine for 180 grainers.
I have used 300 Winchester a lot in rifles with 1 in 12 and 1 in 14 twists.
The 300 Wby can get top velocities with bullets up to a 180 grains with powders with burn rate like 4350 and will do it easily with that powder burn rate and 150-165 grain bullets.

YES you are ok, i had 2 300wby mag and i love it, and in spare i had 2 blanks barrels 1-10 turn, dowglas premiun select match , just wainting for another acction that i get, but now i looking for a small caliber i think the 7mm STW will be the firts option.

I like your loads, the last 7mm STW that a had McMillan TALON, I use 160gr sierra sbt at 3200fps using RL22, cases 8mm REM MAG & 300WBY MAG, it was a real killer, but the barrel was gone and i made another 300wby.
So i need to use the 7mm shilen barrel that i had.
