577ne300H&H to 300wby
I recently got a good deal on a pre64 70 which
had been rechambered from 300H&H to 300 wby.
Since the 300wby is an "improved" 300H&H, can
I fireform the 300H&H which came with the gun
into the wby by simply shooting the H&H??
Thanks in advance

R FlowersWhen I was a kid that was the most common rechambering job performed by gunsmiths.
My dad has a pre-64 Winchester Model 70 that was purchased as a 300H&H and never fired in that configuration. He immediately took it to a gunsmith and had it chambered for 300 Weatherby Magnum. That darned gun has had over 5000 shells fired through it and will still shoot one inch groups!!!
It is a simple matter to fire 300 H&H ammo in a 300 Wby chamber and make to needed cases.

577neI supose there would be a slight (50fps?)
decrease in velocity. There were about 100
rounds with the rifle, so I might as well
enjoy them. Thanks

PanchoYou can go the other way also. I have no trouble sizing new Wby brass down to H&H configuration if I use enough lube and go slow. Sure makes it easy to get 300 H&H brass but the cost is a bummer.

MickinColoWhy don’t you just buy 300 Wby cases? Those 300-H&H cases are worth a lot more than those Wby cases as they are.

I was just going to say that. If you're using H&H brass to fireform the dramatically more popular 300wby, you would do better to sell it to some members of AR! That stuff is like gold anymore.

577neActually its H&H in name only-the ammo is
Federal, not "real" H&H ammo.

You would still think the 300 H&H would be worth more, but a quick check of Cabelas shows 300 H&H Federal running $53-63 and 300 Weatherby Federal going $64-68

However other factory 300 Weatherby is as cheap as $35 a box
So I guess it's shoot and enjoy.
