Rimmed 7mm . . .
I have an encore, and am in the planning stages of a new project barrel . . .

What I'm wanting to put together is a light weight, handy, all weather rifle in SS/Synthetic(preferred) or laminate stock.

I already have several rimless and rebated rim cartridges for the Encore . . . they work great . . . however, when one looks at what the Brits used to build in break action guns (doubles and single-loaders), one sees that they practically always used a rimmed case. I know from experience with a 30-30 contender that the rimmed case makes extraction a no-brainer, for one.

So what I want is something in 7 mm, somewhere in the 280 class. I was considering the 7x65R, but am open to suggestions for other rounds that I may have overlooked. I know that Mike Bellm chambers a rimmed 7-08 based off of the 444 Marlin case. I also know that the 7x57 comes in a rimmed version.

Comments/suggestions welcome . . .

Is the 7x75 SE Vom Hoff a "unique" case design, or is it based on some other case?

I found both of them in the libary of a case design program, and had to do some digging to come up with better discriptions for you.

To quote COTW,
7x75R Vom Hofe Super Express, This big cartridge was introduced by Vam Hofe about 1939 and is currently produced by the Walter Gehmann Co in Germany. The 7x75R is quite potent, in the same general class as the 7mm Rem Mag. Cases are imported by "Old Western Scrounger".

To para-phrase COTW (to much to type)
280Ross (280 Rimless) is actualy a Semi-Rimmed case, origionaly designed as a Canadian military cartridge (in the straight pull Ross rifle), it quickly caught on with sportsman due to it's "high velocity" and "flat trajectory"
(140gr @ 2900fps, 180gr @ 2550fps).

Both would be somewhat difficult, but not impossable, to locate brass for, the rest of the components are standard items.

you can use cases for 9,3x74R, as the head dimensions are identical.

But if you're not considering a rifle for open plains hunting, I think a 7x57R or a 7x65R would be a better choics as the vom Hofe just bring some 150 fps more but a lot of job with cases and data.

By the way, 7x57R and 7x65R are the most common cartridges for combination guns here in Europe. You can get that ammo everywhere ammo is sold here. There are a lot of fine loads from www.norma.cc and http://www.rws-munition.de/de/jagd_patronen/anwendungsberater.htm

The .280 Ross is based on the .280 Ross!~ BTW, it is a .287" bullet, not a .284".



The 7X75R is based on the 8X75R, which is an 8mm Magnum made for combination and double guns - very potent indeed!

I think I would stick to the 7x57R or the 7x64R(7x65R?). You would have something rather unique for this side of the pond but components and loading info would be readidly available.

David White rechambers 7-08 Encore barrels to a 7x444 Improved. He will shorten 280 Improved dies that you need to load this round. He has a thread on Mike Bellms forum.

I know you wrote 7 mm. But you also said "flat shooting".

How about 6.5x57R or 6.5x65R? The latter shoots as flat as a 7 mm Rem with lighter bullets, but with much less recoil and pressure.
