Is she bright orange too ? Be easy for the "revenoors" to find up in the "holler"
Minox has just brought our binocs in same color scheme. Can scopes be far behind ?
12 January 2012, 04:30
45-70 shooterOkay talked to Savage today and got the story.
300 each were made in a 8mm and 9.3.
All were intended for export. Somehow the shop I bought mine from got 3 9.3s.
It arrived today and it is cool. The barrel weight is like a 375 H&H, 20", center feed detachable magazine. As I mentioned Miox is now making binocs in the pattern. I'' be contacting (bugging) them to get a scope the same

If it shoots and you like it that's all that counts.

45-70 shooterYup that's why we play with guns!

FOOBARYou're right about the center feed models, Jason. I have one of those Axis in 25-06 with a center feed clip. I liked everything about it except the flexibility of the stock and that POS add-on looking trigger mess. Wish I could find an aftermarket Axis stock...I'm guessing someone will come up with one soon enough.
Jason, what model number was that center feed 300 WM?
Buds has the Savage receivers in both solid bottom single shot and clip feed for about $450-500 so I might grab one for my 375 Lapua/Rigby "wannabee" project.
I've had a few problems with the old small bolthead pins that cracked with belted mag rounds and cause a bit of a problem, like totally locking up the action...had to pull the barrel, take off the bolt handle and do a bit of wiggling and giggling. Savage fixed that by going to a larger pin and the firing pin is different. If you have several rifles and swapped bolt heads around you will soon get tired of the monkey motiong and just buy a new bolt or two and leave them set up.
Luck

I've always thought that making hunting stuff blaze orange instead of camo made good sense. How many camo flashlights and knives do you think get set down in the woods never to be found again?

I actually put a wrap or two of orange or chartruese or pink tape on most of my gear just because of this. Most of my stuff is plain colored though because I don't put $0.02 of value toward having a camo flashlight or knife but O.D. green or black or wood dissappear quickly in the grass and weeds too.
This Rifle????? Not my preference because I like wood but if it is yours, Enjoy!!!
Cheers,
Jason

Too funny.. Civil unrest in the gun safe.. And for good reason..
Is Savage trying to double down on the ugly factor? And they said it couldnt be done..

Gotta love Savage for reckognizing that "only accurate rifles are intresting". But I couldnt do it.. Orange cammo..?? Isnt that an oxymoron?

45-70 shooterNo Orange camo makes perfect sense unless you are hunting people. Ungulates are COLOR BLIND, the only real reason to wear conventional camo is to avoid other hunters and pesky Wardens.
Remember these rifles were designed for Europe where laws are different and driven hunts are a common event. Even here, in many states, you have to wear a LOT of orange, do you think in your widest dreams that a green rifle will hide you ?
I just ordered a dip it yourself kit, so I can finish the job by doing the barreled action, scope and mounts.
Let you know how it works out in the black timber around Yellowstone where there are other non Ungulates that make a 9.3x62 good insurance.

I think I can answer that question. Col. Whelen was his own autobiographer, as is usually the case. It's quite unusual for someone else to write another person's autobiography, but I suppose it has been done.

I have never had a 9,3x62, but I have shot a bunch of game with a 9,3x74R. They are both excellent hunting cartridges.
My favorite and my favorite 375 H&H both have 19 3/4" [50cm] barrels.
If I ever diod get a 9,3x62 it too would have the 50cm barrel.
The only reason I do not have a 9,3x62 is that I just have so much 375 H&H stuff.
Also if you are going to have an orange stock, the metal might as well be orange too...

Let us know how she shoots.
PS it is hard to beat the Speer 270 bullet for deer and pigs, loaded at 2490fps, but I think in a bolt action the Nosler Partition will work for everything.
I have used it a lot im my 9,3 double.

ColoradoMattI wanted to get my son a left handed youth model rifle in 204 Ruger for Coyote smokin'. It seems none of the major companies makes one (That I know of). I called up Savage and they made me one up for an extra $150.00 above the price of their standard left handee youth model 111. It's an ugly little beast, but for my son, it was love at first sight. Coyotes beware!

I would own one if the price was really cheap like hundred bucks or so.

Scott KingGranted I'm in a different region but if I showed up in any kind of public location with that thing I'd fully expect to have the rifle taken away from me and be beaten to death with it. Ammo confiscated by one of my attackers and put to good use naturally.

You submit photos of the dumbest, ugliest, most obscene looking firearm anyone has ever seen anytime anywhere and "report to Moderation," a picture of a weird old guy? Is whining to the moderation an example of your Wyoming toughness?
Your myopia must be nearly crippling if you need that rifle to hunt with.

BohicaBetcha 100.00 you won`t lose that rifle in the tules!! Sure wish I`d had that one on a trip to Pohakuloa Impact area to thin goats back in 1980 or thereabouts. Put my [camoed] 700 264 under a tree that was a perfect figure 4 and went out to dress a few small goats to take back to the jeep. Hung a red bandanna on a limb to be safe. Got down into the bowl 200 yds away and EVERY tree was a perfect figure four and the bandanna was GONE. Took me over two hours to find the rifle.which had just tipped over and was behind the tree. Never did find the #$%^ bandanna.

45-70 shooterAt least you found it ! Had a buddy (guide) in WY who killed a nice cow Elk for "Home Meat" after he was done guiding.
Leaned his pre war M 70 300 H&H against a tree and rushed to get the meat out before dark (Grizzly country). Next day he said bad words and went back to look for it...no luck.
Happily it was well below zero and when a snowmachine rider found it in March it was still mostly OK. A new stock and it's back in the field. (Small town honest folks where we live)

45-70 shooterSpoke with Savage today about the failures to feed the last round. They say the use the same magazine spring for everything from the 25-06 to the 375 Ruger. They also admitted they do not function tests their rifles prior to shipment.
Given the weight difference between a 25-06 loaded cartridge and a loaded 375 Ruger, you don't have to be a rocket builder to figure out that popping up that last round out of the magazine for a push feed rifle, will be harder with a fully extended magazine spring, the heavier the loaded round. Savage apparently missed that. They are sending me a "new" spring but I doubt that will cure it. More to follow.
