340 Weatherby options?
Do any other rifle manufactures offer this chambering besides Weatherby? Not that I have a problem with their rifles, but just want to know if there is other options?

TIA

Sako is the only mainstream factory that I know of chambering for the 340. There are numerous semi-custom makers that could accomodate you, I built mine on a Rem 700 action. - dan

Sako!!

I will just roll on over to their site for a look. That would be one of my top choices.

Thanks Dan.

Nothing that I can see about the 340 Weatherby on their site but did see it mentioned on a search with no detail.

Where do I look?

I got a Sako m75 Deluxe in .340 a little over 2 years ago. As far as I know Sako only offers (offered?) the .340 Wby. in the Deluxe model. It's a really handsome rifle and shoots well. I took it on one trip to Namibia for a bunch of plains game and have carried it here a lot as a backup rifle for pig guiding. I really like that it carries 4+1 (actually 5 will fit and feed in the magazine, but you can't close the bolt over them so it defeats the purpose). If it weren't quite so pretty ( ) I'd carry it more often.

You may have to contact the importer, or do a search for one of the rifles already in Canada. I know they used to catalogue them both in the 75 and the TRG-S. I see now the TRG-S is only offered in 30-378 and 338 Lapua. I don't know about the 75 currently. - Dan

The 338ultramag offers slightly better performance with cheaper brass and ammunition available.

I have a Winchester Model 70 Classic chambered in 338 Win Mag. It seems to me that it would be real easy to ream it out to 340 Weatherby, remove the spacer in the magazine, and there you go. Stamp the barrel and you have yourself a 340 Weatherby. It may require more work than that, I'm certainly no gunsmith.

Now concerning the recoil... I had one and it was a bit to much for me. If you have never shot one before, borrow someone's 338 Win Mag, get some Federal High Energy, 250 grain loads, and then light a few off. Recoil is almost identical to the 340 Weatherby. Snappy!

The High Energy loads from Hornady and Federal for the 338 are so close to the 340 that I personally couldn't justify owning one. That's my opinion and you may think I'm all wet! That's alright too!

Boilerroom, the other day I saw a Sako 75 deluxe in 340 on Guns America - it should still be there. Sako also chambered their ealier L691 model in 340, but they came with a 24 inch barrel; the 75 comes with a 26. Lou

The 340 has been a strong seller for Weatherby since it's inception in the early sixties. THe 338 WINCHESTER is more practical in terms of expense, but I've seen 340 Weatherby for sale everywhere including Africa. Don't try that with the 338 Edsel, I mean Ultra Mag. If you reload, you can certainly bring the price down to reasonable levels. jorge

You could do that job for sure, but you would also need to put in a new bolt stop as well...

A thought would be to just have a action barreled into a 340. I've had 4 tubes put on over the years and they all shot like a house a fire.

The way they will shoot if you put them together is in another league than either the Wby or the Sako can do for you.

And, you'll not be in the project a much more money wise.

Just something to think about

I'm kind of caught between buying a 340 Weatherby and a 338 Rum. I'd like to pick up a Sako 75 but I'm looking for a stainless option. That puts me back to the Weatherby. Also, I don't want it in a rifle under 8lbs. I'm still strongly considering a Sendero in 338 Rum.

The price of the brass is not too discouraging. Its not like I'm going to be shooting box after box of bullets. I have rifles for that.

If you acquire the 340 Weatherby you may want to install a muzzle brake! I have a muzzle brake on my Mark V 340 Weatherby and the felt recoil is very similar to a 270.

Two comments for boiler and Yank: If you are considering an RUM, you might want to buy lots of brass. It is NOT selling at all. As far as the muzzle brake, I don't care for them at all and one thing's for sure, Professional Guides and Hunters HATE THEM. jorge

The easiest(cheapest) way to get into a 340 would be to re-chamber any .338 that has a long enough action , like M-700 or M-70 .

If you don't mind the M-700 , a RUM is probably the path of least resistence .

I think enough 300 RUM s have been sold so that there will be some form of RUM case around for quitre a spell .

To what part of the country are you referring to about it not selling? Is that in your world of Florida, or are you commenting about the rest of the USA as well?

I'd guess they are not moving well in your neck of the woods, which would not suprise me much. But...you get out in the west where we have the range and the critters and you will find that they are selling quite fine.

Just a wondering where you are coming from with your comment?

Thx

I have a dealer's license and have access to wholesalers who comment on the data available to them. The top five sellers are o6, 270, 7Rem mag, 300Win, 223, 308( not nessesarily in that order) and the WSMs are fairly hot right now. Remington's "Ultras" the possible exception on the 300 are not selling well at all. Remington has stopped making several "other brand" calibers in an effort to foment sales of the Ultras and the SAUMs. I may live in Florida, but I don't hunt much here. jorge

Hi Mark, good to hear from you again. Along the lines of your posts, the cheapest boxes of loaded 340 Wby ammo I ever bought were in Long Island. Apparently it's not a popular caliber there, go figure. - Dan
