Got to handle a Rem 798 in 270 Win today. Fit and finish were just fine, action was smooth and not sticky, laminated stock was well done, barrel was centered in the barrel channel, inleting was good, just an unpretentious Interarms Mark X marked Remington 798. All for the princely sum of $549. The important caveat is, of course, will it shoot, does it have a decent chamber? Even if the barrel is not so hot, it is a good candidate for rebarreling and you're still not out a lot of money. Wonder when the 375 and the 458 will show up. Not a prom queen, just a nice cheap date. I wonder if this will be like the 788, it gets popular and Remington pulls the plug because it shows up their beloved 700? Time will tell.

For about half that price I much prefer a used commercial FN Mauser.

I hope soon, as i plan to purchase the stainless 375 H&H they are going for around $825.00 And as per remington and hogue they fill fit right into the hogue overmolded stock. The same one used on the Ruger alaskan except i'll go with full aluminum bedding block

I bought one of the last of the charles daly's for $270. What is it about stamping "remington" on them that makes one worth twice that?

Spend a little more or maybe the same money and get a FN Supreme...

2 years agou I bough a like new FN 270. it was built in 1951. I paid 600.00. I Also have a JC higgins (FN) 30,06 I got for 350.00 and a real cool hawthorn 760. FN Supreem action) for 375.00.
While the MK 10 is a good action , 525 is a little much to pay for the action to start a custom. A 1999 montana is about 625.00 i think.
things I will say for the MK 10 as proudced by Remington. One, as in the interarms and the daily, the hinged floor plate is very nice when compared to the Standard FN.(the FN supreem is much nicer)& the fact taht if you want it in stainless remington will have it soon.
I do not care for the Remington stock, but there are about a zillion stocl options out there for the MK 10...tj3006

About a year ago I saw one in Southern Minnesota (a Rem 798) and the stock fit was horrible.....on a scale of 1-10 it was a -2 at best.

Then I saw another one in Fort Worth Texas a few weeks ago.....stock fit was a lot better but still poor....it had moved up to a 3 on the 1-10 scale.

Are they now making an acceptable gun?......does the stock look like it matches the barreled action a little?

I dunno, guys. The rifle might be a good value, but I think it's just ugly. I'm usually a fan of the classic Remington rifles (CDL, Model 7, 40X, etc.), but the clunky appearance of the 798 leaves me cold. That, and the laminated stock is pretty fugly, too. Eh, maybe it'll grow on me.

There are simply better choices than a 798. Savage acion would be my preference.

Is there another manufacturer offering a stainless mauser in 375 H&H ?

I had one of them CD MKX actions rebarreled into a .30-338WM. Put it in a Bell&Carlson medalist stock. That one is nice and smooth, feeds like a dream and shoots sub moa. Good mauser action.
