I have a .30-06, but my all around hunting caliber in Alaska is the .338WM.
338 does it all for plains game, too, but we are planning on getting a 30-06 with a 12.5" LOP for grandkids and guests. We have larger for buff, of course.

jimmy jI like to make sure that I am covering all the bases, so I had a 358 norma made to fit between the two!
Actually, I have all three; the .338 that I have used for elk, moose, and everything below, the 375 likewise, and the 358 for days when I cant decide!

ldmay375The more I analyze the 338 Win Mag with a 225 TTSX, the more I appreciate that cartridge- hell even at 2700 fps, I really cannot convince myself that 2900 fps is of any real advantage under 300 yds to me. But......

I am still fighting the urge to have a 340 WBY put together.
There is one local that I have to talk myself out of each time I am in there...just keep saying it is too close to my .338wm. Although there is a Sako 416 rem mag just a few stores down from that one

Well you do have those rather large bears there, so I see your point

That worked successfully for a few years until a wounded, vindictive brown bear taught me that precise bullet placement is not always possible in thick alders, at spitting distances and when time is measured in split seconds. Lucky to come out of that lesson alive, I decided to look for a more suitable rifle."

Why stop? While you are at it wedge a 358 Norma in between them.
Or just get 358 Norma and you don't need the other two.
See, I tried that with the 9.3×64 Brenneke.
Problem is now I want another 338 Winchester , another 375 HandH and another 375 Ruger.
Even tho it can be argued on one point or other that the 9.3×64 is better. Probably unsuccessfully !
Really , there is nothing to argue over several great rounds . I voted get a 375 just because, why not !
Az Writer does a great point on Knowing one trajectory and sticking with it.

smallfryAnytime you can rationalize replacing one caliber with two you are doing ok! Provided that you realize your mistake and go back and add the old caliber back and own all 3!

I am back from a long Hiatus... or whatever.
Take care.

AtkinsonI agree the 358 Norma, 9.3x62 or 64, are great options to the .338 Win. and the .358 may even be a better round, but not by much..
The 338 has a better selection of components, and ease of finding components, but mostly is just spells USA all over..the .375 spells big bears, and African DG but not by much.
Bottom line is give me anyone of them and I'll get the job done in a hurry..
