.270-300
I have been offered a J.D. Clower .270-300 rifle with a weatherby action and custom stock. I have not heard of this round and have no idea where to get reloading data for it. Hell i cant even find the maker on the internet. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

First you need to know what .300 is necked down to .270, but .270 Weatherby data should be ok starters for most.

I would be careful; it could be based on the 300 Savage.

It's probably a .270-300 weatherby.....but you need to know that and not guess on it....

Personally, I'd drop it totally.....unless you are interested in rebarreling to something a bit bigger like the 7mm STW, 8mm Rem Mag, .300 weatherby etc

I would agree unless you have a chance to shoot it and it is deadly accurate, comes with reloading dies and cases, and is something that "pleases" you in terms of appearance and handling.

What is the price bacuse if you ever do get tired of it it may be extremely hard to sell on and recover your costs.

Thanks guys. It is in fact a .300 win mag necked to .270 i found out from the seller. I assume that it is comparable to a Weatherby .270 Mag but I dont know for sure. Im going to buy it (1,000) and Ill keep the results posted, if i live through it

I assume it comes with dies? If so, and if its a shooter...and you have the cash...seems like a good deal to me *shrug*

In this case .270 Weatherby data should be a bit conservative for your cartridge and a powder like RL-25 or equivalent just might be the ticket.

I have a few months to do more research on it, i wont be home until march. I figure that the case capacity for the weatherby 270 mag is about the same. First test firing will probably be done with a gun vise and a length of 550 cord. that also gives me time to locate some Winchester primers, does anyone know where they can be had?

Have you got the gunsmith's last name correct? Could it be Cloward rather than Crower?

Maybe a stupid question but why the 550 cord?

To answer two questions at once. It is a Cloward, my mistake. The 550 cord is to facilitate the squeeze of the trigger from behind a good piece of cover. i like to experiment, but not with my face by the reciever. Mostly thats a joke.

Just looked up case capacities in Quickload.
270 Wby - 82gr
300Win Mag 88 - 92gr depending on brand of case.

I shoot a 270-300 Win. mag. imp with an FN mauser action and 26" Lilja barrel.Dale Story put it together for me a number of years ago and it kills deer like lightning.I have used only the 130 Nosler ballistic tip with the following loads; 73.5 RL 22 / 76 IMR-7828 / 79 H1000 / I ran the IMR 7828 load over the chrono and the average velocity was 3477. 81 grains of H1000 ran 3595 but was to hot and I backed it off to 79. I also tried 69 N165 but velocity was only 3266. Good luck!

No expert here, but it should ne no sweat to to have a 270X300 win reamed to a .270 weatherby. That is a prety bad ass round.
Not much out there that is better for open country than the .257 weatherby.

Unless I am much mistaken, the 270 Wby is based on a 2.5" case not the full length case & as such will not clean up a 300 Win chamber or that of any round based on the 300 Win with the shoulder in the original position.

Shinzo - you sure about that? I thought the Wby has a bit less taper, and the shoulder farther forward. This should equate to being able to clean up a 270/300 chamber one would think.

towedjumper2,

If I'm not mistaken, I believe Doc has a rifle chambered in the 270-300WM. May want to shoot him a pm.

Good Luck

A 270Wby case is trimmed to 2.549". A 300Win case is trimmed to 2.620". You will have greater capacity in the 300Win case.

From ammoguide, the 270 Wby is 2.012" base to shoulder, the 300 Win is 2.196 base to shoulder, lengths as advised by 30378. So yup I'm sure. Smiler The 270 Wby will not clean up a the shoulder on a 300 Win or wildcat based on that case. Just comparing the ones in my collection reveals this to be obviously so.

Alright, I had a chance to get home and shoot it. this is the setup: .270-300, weatherby Mk V action, unsure of barrel, 150 grn Hornady SST, 75 gr IMR 4350. As of yet i havent chrono'd it ran out of time and am back in iraq. it shoots damn fine, not alot of felt recoil but loud as all hell. Now I ask for load suggestions for the SSTs I have.

Thanks to this site I have tracked down the maker of the rifle, talked to him on the phone quite a bit and got lots of info. Im back overseas and am looking to rebarrel in the same cartridge. So who is your favorite barrel maker?
