bigbullsOf course it will depend on what bullets are loaded and how they are loaded but for a direct comparison of case capacity only they are equal, both holding 57 grains of water.

ramrod340Part of the difference is due to the neck of a 6.5vs 7mm. Same length the 7 has more capacity.
Loadtech happens to show a 6.5X57 mauser case. My numbers are just a touch different than Bigbulls but are very close.
6.5X55 58.8
6.5X57 Mauser 56.4
7X57 Mauser 57.3
Various brands could give you that much difference.

ColoradoMattJust today I read an old Handloader magazine article by John Barsness that included a case capacity chart listing the case capacity of a large number of cases. In the chart the 6.5x55 and the 7x57 both hold 52 grains of water. You still might be right, ramrod, but John Barsness seems to agree with bigbulls. Not that gunwriters are never wrong. In any event, both cases capacity must be so close that I won't lose any sleep over not comparing them for myself. Thanks for the input ramrod.

As to the numbers I listed above I claim no responsibility except that I copied it from Loadtech.
Their data will vary just like brands. I messure my cases and adjust the loadtech capacity accordingly.
My Barnes Manual list:
6.5X55 as 55.04
7X57 as 55.55
I just measured two 7X57 brands that I had:
R&P measured 55.3
Grafts measured 57.2
For government work I would call the 6.5X55 & 7x57 the same. If the 7 was necked down to 6.5 you would loose some volume.
Only way to know the actual capacity is to get the brand case you are wanting to use and measure it.

seafire/B17GSince I don't use water in my cases when I shoot them, but I do own all three cartridges listed...
In the real world, their isn't any difference at all in "in the field" performance....
So the reason for the question sort of eludes me...
