338 Win Mag need loads with Barnes TSX
I am beginning a project to develop loads for the 210 and 225 Barnes TSX bullets in A-bolt with 26" barrel. Please reply with your suggested powder choices and loads. I am looking for maximum velocity. Thanks

264, sir;

A couple weeks back, I was flabbergasted to find that my new Savage .338 Model 116 will put the 225 TSX well UNDER 1" for three round groups at 100 yards. The barrel is 24", fluted and muzzle-braked.

Using 73.0, 74.0 and 75.0 of Reloader 19 with the TSX 225, the three-round groups measured 0.90", 0.45" and 0.59". Temperature was in the high 80s, giving a bit of a margin for colder weather as far as pressure goes.

I shouldn't have to tell you that no one is a flawless rifleman, and these groups could have been affected by any number of little flubs. However, THREE SMALL GROUPS IN A ROW indicate that something is definitely right.

I've decided to go with the 74.0 load, which I chronographed at a flat 2900 fps average. This will be my elk load for an Alberta Rockies hunt this October.

The most accurate load my Ruger 77 Mk. II shoots is 71 gr. IMR 4350 with Fed 215 primer and 225 gr. TSX's. I get consistant .5-.7" groups and velocity around 2850fps. Of course your results may vary.

I've been working with the 185 and the 210 TS in both my 338/300 and my 340 that 210 will about shoot into one hole for the most part.

The 185 is about .75" or so, not quite as good but still ok.

I'd try H4831SC and see how it goes, that is what I'm using in my two rifles.

Good luck

MD

ps I've been using the TS bullet since they first came out, I've found without exception that they've been scarry accurate and not beat in that department by any. I've used them in the 22's on up.

I like 71 gr 4831 just fill it up basicly on the 250 this is a nice comfortable .5 in at 100 low recoil load not real fast though same load with 160 x is about 2900 great deer round

I use 75 grs. of H-4350 with a 210 Nosler for 3005 FPS...RL-19 is an awesome powder with about any bullet in the .338 as is the old standby H4831...RL-22 works good in my gun with the heavy bullets..

Thanks for the suggestions to all. I have yet to investigate the 4350s. I found I could get just short of 3000 fps at 12 ft with the Chrony using R-19 with promising accuracy. I will work with fired cases to improve the groupings. We were under 3 inches at 200 yds. Recoil, trigger pull and scope power are probably contributing to group size. I bought a spring kit from Timney. I also tried Ramshot Hunter but did not find a maximum yet.
