Picked this one up at Holt's, 7x57, lined barrel, action dated 1898. I believe it is built on an intermediate length transitional action.

Very nice! What is "lined barrel" in 284 cal? I thought they only did lined barrels in 22 LR.

Good question, the auction description reads

"nitro reproved 'F. CLARKE ZERO LINED' barrel"

It passed proof so I'll give it a go.

I see in the same Holts auction an Alexander Henry & Co Model 1903 self loader also marked (at the muzzle) "Zero Lined F. Clarke". This is in 22RF though.

Who is F. Clarke and what linings does he do?

Interesting rear express sight with what appears to be a small ring Mauser carbine flip up ladder sight leading the parade.
