Well it was originally a French military MAS ?36? I think. 7.5 French cartridge, although some have been converted to .308.

Is that your rifle? I was recently given a 1949 Santa Fe Mas (my first free rifle!) Yes, Its a sporterized French Mas 36, altered by Golden State Arms. I shot it three times before a primer was pierced by too much firing protrusion. I'm gonna get around to trying a new pin from Numrich.

What rear sight is on that rifle? Mine has a plastic rear sight held on by only one screw. I'd like to replace it with a peep. It seems it would go well with the 16 inch barrel.

Does that rifle have a safety. Mine has an ugly sheet metal safety that does not work. The trigger is not awful, though, after some polishing.

The Sante Fe Division of Golden State Arms imported and sporterized a lot of mil-surp guns. They range form sorta crude to nicely done depending upon the grade you bought. I have a 1941 Supreme Mk III 303 similar to your MAS. They're not especially valuable but a lot of them were nicely done for what they are.
