"Winchester Dates of Manufacter" show that "IF" this is a pre 64 winchester model 70 -and- in which case it has been either rebored or rebarreled to .280 Rem, then the date of manf would be 1939.
HOWEVER, it would NOT accept the "g" in the serial number and I strongly suspect it to be of newer manufacture - well after 1964 - and the site will not tell me that information. Sorry. BT53

"G" is on the new classics . Im not sure what year the G started though.

Is it a Push feed? I know the 280 was only offerd 1 or 2 years in the control feed classics . .280 were offered in certain years of the post 64 push feed too.

Im thinking a classic in .280 is not common. I have a bunch of the old winchester M70 classic catalogs . I think only one has the .280 offered. I could dig them out latter and check

I owned a "G" series classic and it was purchased new in '94. You will know it's a classic by the mauser type extractor on the right hand side of the bolt. It's a bar about 3/8" X 6" with a claw hook by the bolt face.

I never post full serial #s either for various cautionary reasons. However, is there some standard scam with serial #? Just curious...

Heed Brads advice and edit your original post to x out the last three digits of the serial number. What would stop a less than scrupulous individual from taking that number and reporting the gun as stolen? And now they found you advertising that you have that gun...


Winchester started the "G" prefix in 1968 as required by some gov't mandate. If it is a classic controlled feed rifle it will have classic roll marked on the barrel. It will also have the unmistakeable non-rotating extractor on the bolt.

If you rifle is a classic controlled round feed the serial number that you provided would put its manufacture around '94.

If the bolt is like THIS it is a controlled round feed action.

It's a controled round feed guys.
