Your go to hunting rifle
I would choose the synthic with a blued barrel
I could cut down weight that way.
I would use the 338 RUM for calber.

Like everyone, I've got a bunch and like wood and blueing. My go to gun over the last 10 or so years is a Mod. 70 Classic, blued action stainless 23" barrel in Mac. featherweight stock
Lota liquide sunshine in B.C. stainless makes sence.

My go to gun is a Krieghoff Semper. It has a color case action, rust blued bbls, and french walnut stock.

When I went to canada this last week I took two guns a stainless 77 MKII in 06 sty stock and a 12x7x57R blued wood stock combo gun. I carrired both but the day it rained all day I used the Ruger.

I like stainless syt stocked guns they are very usefull. But that said I use a 99sav blued wood for Wis deer hunting most of the time. But I also used many stainless ones all so.

I use the rifle/shotgun that fit what I am doing at the time.

Thats the wonderful thing about this country we can own many differant kinds and calibers.

Mine is a Serengeti (now Kilamanjaro) laminated walnut custom stock with a stainless barrel on a blued action....sort of some of all I guess.
I like stainless barels, shoot better quicker for me most times....I like the look of pretty wood and stainless too...but rust blue looks awful good too--any of em will do the job, mine is on a Sako 75 action in 270 Win or 7mm Dakota, depending on the quarry....

Curiously, I'm hearing and reading a lot of mixed messages about the Kimber rifles, ie, you have a good chance at a lemon. I have no experience with them.

I do not own a rifle with a CM barrel anymore, but many of my actions, if not most are CM but now all have stainless bbls.

I got tired of the tiny rust spots on my blued bbls despite post hunt and pre-safe storage care.

I don't own a stainless / resin type synthetic stocked rifle as I've never been enthused by them. I am drawn to laminated timber stocks and quite like the look of stainless barrels and actions in them.

My go too rifle is oddball compared to everyone else who has posted so far but I just keep coming back to my blued / Brazilian Swamp Wood .357 mag Rossi Lever 24" octagonal barrel and a Tang sight - does everything I've ever asked it to do.

I am having a No1 Mk3 Lithgow in 303.35 put together right now that will have a synthetic stock that will do the bigger jobs the Rossi cant. Gunsmith thought I was nuts not opting for a stainless barrel. If I had a spare couple of grand I'd opt for a figured checkered walnut stock for it instead of the utilitarian synthetic stock set

I don't have a go to hunting rifle. It's all about what powder, cases formed or bullets I have in stock to put something together or what ever my mood prefers.

Howa 1500 S/S in 30-06. My only stainless rifle, but it gets used the most. It's been very reliable since the day I started hunting, I expect the same will be true the day I die. (I was going to say "...the day I stop hunting," but death seems more likely to come first. Wink )

I voted SS and Synthetic.

I live in Western Washington and get an average of 66 inches a year. Stainless seems to hold up better and plastic doesn't swell when it gets wet.

Though I REALLY like Wood and Blue for looks and non hunting use.

I prefer a Chrome Moly action with stainless barrel and a GOOD composite stock eg; manners or Micky's. My new favourite is a little .308 I have had done in such a configuration.

When Kimber makes the 84L in the Montana version this guy will have one in 270 with a 3.5-10x40 on top.

The 308 MT will stay, but as backup.

Hey Chuck, BTW the Talley Lwt Ex Lows are the cat's meow on M70's... at least on the FWT barrel contour.

I'd suspect they would be picture perfect for the 6X36.

I always use blued and walnut...but then I don't hunt in places, like parts of Alaska, where some of you hunt, and say that it rains pretty much 24/7.

Stainless and synthetic are supremely practical in bad weather, but they are, and will always be ugly.

All of my bolt action rifles are CM.

If I'm not travelling by air: wood/blue

If I fly: synthetic/blue

I only have 2 stainless, one a Marlin .44 for hogs and the other an AR match with Gen 3 night vision also for hogs.

I just picked up a Rem XCR-II in 30-06 last wednesday. It's got a blued stainless trynite barrel and action, and a Hogue bicolor syn. stock, with an amazing recoil pad.

I took it to the range thursday where it was right out of the box shooting 1" @ 100 w/ rem 165 corlokt psp. I took it out this morning hunting, and dropped a doe at what had to be all of 40 feet!

My other go to guns are a 7mmx57 rem 700 mtn rifle (blue/wood) and a Weatherby Ultralight in 338-06 A-Square, which has synthetic stock, fluted barrel stainless w/blued fluting. They all shoot better than I can, so I usually pick by weight, weather etc.

wood/blue for me. i had a few s/s years ago, but sold or gave em' away. i used a wood/blue tang model 77 in alaska for a lot of years, so i know they can handle anything the lower 48 throws. i have owned and seen some practical s/s rifles, but their just not for me these days.

My current "go-to" is a Browning A-Bolt Composite Hunter w/BOSS in 7mm Rem Mag. I also have 2 30-06s with laminate stocks, a Rem 798 (Zastava) and a Sako 85 Greywolf. Any of the three would qualify.
