Your 308 Norma Loads?
Anybody have any loads they like for the 308 norma with 180g bullets? I have some 4831, I think that is the powder that my stepfather and his brother used for their load, but they couldn't find the exact load because they have both moved (at least 3 times each). I was hoping some of you might have some good loads.

Thanks all.

Looked up loading data on a box of shells done years ago ... Norma cases, CCI 250 primers, 74.5 gr H4831. Were fine but stiff in a custom Springfield.

As always ... start lower and work up using good reloading practices.

That sounds around the right place. the load that I show on Jerry's (my stepfather) box that has the last of his loads left, shows 73g with an F215 primer for 3000 fps. I think he finally went up to 74. I have mine as a custom 03 too! cool setup. I will of course work my way up.

I have never used VihtaVouri powders, aren't they the ones that are colored so you don't mix them up? I read an article on them a few years back and it was all very positive. I really haven't played with powders as much as I should. I need to get to the range more, but that is my new goal so keep this stuff coming! :-)

I appreciate it guys.

VV N-560 has worked best for me near the top. This is an easy load, but I have a 26" fast barrel, too.Careful on loading the 308Norma,the factory rifles have a freebore,so your loading could be less.

I didn't know anybody ever factory chambered for the Norma, I'll have to pass that on to my stepfather. Anybody know which companies?

My stepfather maintains to this day that one of the biggest mistakes winchester ever made was to not purchase the 308 and 358 norma when they first came back, make them factory available, and never bother with the 300winmag.

Browning and Parker-Hale Ltd. made 308 Norma Mag. bolt action rifles. I,v shot pronghorn, mule deer and elk useing 165and 180 Gr. bullets in my Parker Hale rifle. The 308 Norma load I used back in Oct. 1969 was Norma brass,Fed.210 primers,Hornady 165 Gr. bullet with 72.0 Gr. of H 4931. One inch five shot groups were common with this load. I also used 76.0 Gr.of N 205 powder back then. Cases were not available when I got the rifle so I used 300 H&H cases which were run into an RCBS trim die. To fire form the cases ,used red dot powder. (3 Gr.) then filled the case with cornmeal . When Calelas moved to Sidney,NE they sold the Norma cases $3.?? per box of 20 , I then purchased five boxes which are still new in the boxes. This web site brings back some fine memories of the good old days of shooting and hunting in Nebr, Wyo, and Colo. For you young folks --KEEP Records-- it,s fun to look back .

Danish "Schultz&Larsen" made rifles for the 308 Norma Magnum. Swedish "Varberger" also made rifles in this caliber.
