Ive just got hold of a weatherby mark v sporter
in 270weatherby and it only has a 22inch barrel
is this bad? and its made in japan?

The 270 weatherby cartridge is wasted in a 22" barrel.You really need a 26" barrel to make use of the case capacity.

I'm sure the guy sold it, because it had a 22" barrel!

Steve-here is my thoughts on this-if it feels good and you shoot it well I'd worry not.

Just some food for thought. A while back for giggles I took a 26" 257 Wby and cut it down to 23". The total difference of b4 and after fps came out to 30 fps per inch lost. So to me no big deal. Call it losing 100 fps, that to me just doesn't mean a thing anymore. I will say there was a day that it would of meant some difference but not anymore. I would say that your 257 runs about 120 fps slower than most 26" tubes.

I think I'll agree with Mark. You probably won't get every last ounce of performance out of the shorter barrel, but does that really matter?? In terms of field results, it probably matters not at all. The shorter barrel might increase muzzle blast a tad, but you might be able to adapt your powders accordingly (assuming you reload). Wear good muffs!

If it was me, I'd see if the gun shoots and handles well. If yes, I would personally enjoy the advantage you have gained in how well the gun handles. It is really only you who can determine whether every last fps is important to you...

Even that it has a short barrel i shot a five shoot group at 100meters it measured .65 so i will keep that barrel for now. It has an impressive muzzle blast LOL

Steve if you get a chance try some of Barnes new 130 Triple Shocks in it.

Also give the Hornady 150 a go, this load was really accurate in my 270 Wby.

That's bad, all right! It needs a 26" tube!

To get Weatherby performance, that is! ballisticaly, what you have is a .270 Win. that neeeds 10 grains mor powder to give the same performance. However, a short barrel does not mean it can't be accurate. In fact, a light-weight barrel is usually MORE accurate if it is shorter!

That big muzzle blast is based on the powder in the case not being able to burn efficiently in the shorter barrel. Since the barrel is real accurate, why not just cut your loads down and have a 270 Winchester performance or so.

So you might give up 50 yds ( or meters) in max point blank range, but how much shooting are you doing at 400 plus meters? Using less powder ( also a mid burn rate one such as IMR 4895, 4064, H 4895 etc) will probably increase the throat life on the old Weatherby quite a bit.

If you do decide to rebarrel it some day and don't mind the length, the difference between 26 and 28 inches will make a huge difference compared to 24 vs. 26.

Im going to get a 28inch tube on it as soon as i waste all the reloads i got with the rifle. Ive got 200rounds to go through. I swapped it for an old rem 788 in 222.
