I think most of us got the point, folks just came back with their thoughts about the point.

The only time in my opinion that these discussions become silly is when folks take others comments too seriously.

I am as guilty or more guilty than anyone of getting too fired up over these type discussions. From what I have seen however these type discussions arise on a fairly regular basis and while I may not or will not agree with someone's latest/greatest thing, I am glad that folks come up with such ideas.

The 338 Lapua and the 6PPC were most certainly advancements in their respective applications. They may not be of much interest to this crowd but they were both game changers.

Don't take this the wrong way, but if I want to see you get fired up, CHC, I just visit the Political Forum. As for Cartridges, we all have favorites, some have little differences between them. Some folks like to create something different just 'cause they can or want to...after all, the point of our sport is to have fun; but I'll save the particulars of the 7.65 x 40 DGW for the Wildcat forum.

Point taken. tu2

But as you said, we all have our favorites, for whatever our reason, and yes people like what they like for their own particular reasons. beer

I thought the 260 would be a popular round but it faded faster than most.

Fjold,

I actually looked at BCs for target VLDs in 7mm @168grns and they are almost BC twins to the 140/142s @ a BC of ~.6 and published data revolves around 2800 fps on the Hodgdon website so I think the 284 win with 168s can do what the 6.5-284 does with 140s/142s which also has velocities in the 2800 range.

Legistine actu quod scripsi?

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

I never looked at it from that perspective. I always went along with the 284 is dead and an organ donor crowd. It would certainly be a viable choice.
I am guilty of looking past great rounds. Would you believe I have never owned a 30-06 rifle? Someday I'll have to remedy that.

The point is that the arguments are silly and that people continue to have them even though you could pick almost any date...1915, 1925, 1958, or 1964 and say that no new development was needed past that point yet it still continues and will continue.

My late brother-in-law used to make the point that a 30-30 was all that was needed in Maine (including moose). I think he wanted me to engage the question and explain why I brought a 7 mm Remington, but I didn't take the bait. I bought it in Utah, when I expected longish shots.

Now that I think of it, the 6mm-284 has essentially the same trajectory, but it's interesting.

No question, life isn't worth living without a 22 RF, and I haven't killed anything yet with a 12gauge that I would have missed with a 20-gauge.

All of the guys I hunt with shoot 30-06, 30-30 or both, and do as well as I do.

I dunno.

I like those new cartridges, too.
Some are doing something different.
Hunting wise, the 270//7mm WSMs are repackaging what the 7mmRM was already doing.
But the RUM cartridges are adding a 'faster+' category. One could add the 338 Lapua to that.
The 375 Ruger is great, too, even if only repackaging the 375 H&H.

One could add the 450 Rigby as a repackaging of the 460.

The thing that really shines post-64 are the bullets that make hunting better. We have bonded cup and core, bonded cup and core driving band (Northfork), partition, bonded partition (Swift), monometal grooved (Barnes), monometal driving band (GSC), CEB 'non-con', bore-riding, and polymer-tip bullets. Those add versatility to all the great hunting rigs that already existed one way or another in '64. It's like going from chocolate/vanilla/strawberry to 31 flavors.

Ever notice how EASY it is to get folks wound up???

Ever notice how the vocal and vociferous ones THINK they have a lock and the answer to all things???

Ever notice how easy it is to "spin doctor" their arguments to the opposite view or to something completely different???

EVER NOTICE how no ONE CARES and THEY just keeps palavering on???

EVER NOTICE...???...ANYTHING?...??...beyond the end of your noses???

Just read a few blurbs on the net and you will confirm the answer!!!! diggin

Let's see,

The newest cartridge I've ever owned in a rifle was introduced in 1956.

let me see the newest rifle one I own is the 223, 243 or is it the 416 T but what's your point.

I try and buy all my guns on the open free market so it takes awhile to find them.

I'll buy most any caliber if the price is right a couple hundred cases and a set of dies one is set for a long time

There would be much less posts and threads in this forum if we only had a few cartridges to choose from.
Not sure if that is a good or a bad thing Big Grin

If we shall be very objective about it, we really don't need many different cartridges for hunting. It would make the choices much easier, but also very boring.

The cartridges that would be enough in my opinion, would be:

-22lr for small critters, plinking and young kids.
-222/223 for varminting and a great starting cartridge for kids on small deer(like our Roe deer).
-6.5x55 for any medium sized game.
-9.3x62/9.3x74R for any large sized game and it works great on the smaller ones too.
-.500 NE for pure DG hunting.

I own some of these, but I own others too.
My personal favorite is the 6.5-06.

Of the newer cartridges, I like 300 WSM, 375Ruger and 416Ruger.

I very much like the idea of having identical rifles in different cartridges and that would be the path I would follow today if I was to start to fill my gun safe all over again.

Nostaligic dreams can consist of a 26"brl 300H&H dropbox magnum mauser,
However the same day I inspected the heavy 3ooH&H, I also opened my mind and picked up a trim light Kurz-WSM
that was beside it,......made me realise it was time to think outside the square.

I used to think the same, then realised That i should not limit myself.

Some nostalgically dream of owning a British bespoke rifle or shotgun,
Yet we have British gun firms acknowledging that the European makers are equal if not better.
So much so that the British firms contracted them to manufacture on their behalf.

However, I don't doubt that nostalgia alone , is enough to satisfy some people.
I guess the same applies to ones personal choice of cartridges.
