Maxx6.5 remington magnum
Is there an easy way to do this on a Savage, by converting a 7mm-08? What needs to be done?
thanks

vapodogCan you live with the 6.5-284 instead?
That is close in performance and a lot easier to work with.

Paul HWith the 6.5 rem mag, you'll have to get the bolt opened up for the larger rim, and there may be some issues with feeding. The 284 win case has a rebated rim, same dia as the -08, so no bolt work, and generally it will feed in an -08 action with little or no work. The 6.5X284 has become a popular cartridge, with lots of very high quality brass available.

MaxxWith a 140 grain bullet, and the 6.5-284,
1) what is the optimum barrel length?
2) what is a reasonable velocity with 140 grain bullets?
thanks again

Barrel length can be 24" plus or minus and the velocity of the 6.5-284 runs within 50-100'/sec of the 6.5 Rem Mag
Loading data for both is in Hornady's handbook

When converting a Savage 110 series rifle to a belted magnum cartridge, one simply purchases and installs a magnum head onto the end of the bolt. It is very inexpensive and easily done.
Maxx has not told us which Savage rifle he is considering for the conversion. If it is one of the 110's rather than a model 10, the action length will be long enough to convert it to a 6.5-06 or even to a 264 Win Mag. The original 110 action was used for many years for all cartridges. I have one in a 22-250, the action is long enough to be converted to any cartridge up to and including a 375 Weatherby with the change of a barrel and a new bolt head.

I would recommend 25-26 inch barrel for 6,5X284 Norma. Lapua, Norma and Hornady makes brass

MaxxThanks guys. I am looking to use a new savage 16fcss, is this action capable of the 6.5 reminton mag conversion? How about the 6.5-284?
What other issues do I need to consider for this project?

DutchThe Savage short action should work fine, as was said, just unscrew the barrel and screw on the new one, using a freshly resized cartridge as a head gauge.
Order a magnum bolt head from Sharp Shooter supply if you go with the 6.5 Rem mag.
The only question I would have is the magazine and feeding. You may want to ask Fred at SSS if there is a magazine for the 6.5/350Rem mag, or for the 284 case. I'd hinge my decision on which magbox is readily available -- a non-feeder is not desirable. There are lots of 6.5/284 in use for target shooting, and I'm sure someone has figured out the magazine geometry. HTH, Dutch.

MaxxThanks guys. I been doing some homework, and have more questions. If I can load the 6.5x55 to modern chamber pressure, what velocity can I expect with 140 gr, and a 140 gr bullet?
-does the 6.5x55 need a long action?
thanks
