magnum primers
Does anybody use magnum primers in their 30/06? Is there a substantial pressure increase? Accuracy benefits?

I have but one 30-06 rifle and I use Winchester Magnum primers for all my loads. Why? 1)I have 1000 of the primers. 2)I may occasionally use one of the slow burners such as 4831 and/or H1000. 3) It makes things so much simpler.

Any difference? I doubt it. I work up all loads so pressure is not a concern.

Accuracy? C'mon, it's a 30-06.

You can , it's not required unless you are using ball powders. As long as you work the loads up you should be fine. I have found mag primers to be not quite as accurate as std. primers for several carts. so I stay away unless I have to.

If you do a search in the reloading forum you may find some info.

I have used different brands of magnum primers from time to time in standard cartridges including the .30/'06, usually when I was out of standard primers!

I see no benefit at all to using them, nor did I experience any dire results either! If anything, standard ammo loaded with magnum primers was perhaps a little less accurate than the same load with regular primers.

Great answer. The best reason to use "magnum" primers is because you have some. They are unnecessary in a .30-06 with any powder, however they typically won't hurt anything, either. Except your pocketbook for the extra few dollars per carton.

If the rifle is a magnum rifle I use magnum primers. If it isn't I use Large Rifle primers.
Thats worked out for me for a long time.

CXL,

In MY 30-06 (a BAR) mganum primers (CCI250) reduced muzzle velocity by ~ 15 fps on average when compared to standard large rifle primers (CCI200). The results were similar in the 308 Win (7.62X51 Nato).

Yeah I know it sounds crazy but several years ago I bought 1000 LR primers down in Phoenix and when I got home I discovered i had picked up Winchester LR Magnums by mistake. So now, I said, what the hell am I going to do with these? Then it hit me, I had a lifetime supply of primers for my one and only 30-06 hunting rifle. I cut my loads back a couple of grains and worked right back up to where I was before so I don't think the Winchester magnum primers are as hot as some of the others like the Federal magnums which will cause a sticky bolt lift without changing anything else.

I also use the Winchesters for fire-forming wildcats and stuff like that so my mistaken investment is slowly paying off.

I´ve used magnum primers for all my rifles since a couple of years back (that´s 6.5x55 and up). So far I really can´t say that I´ve seen any diffrence.

using mag primers is one step more that I do when trying to work up and get the most accurate load I can.

I reload for 18 different CF rifle calibers and 7-8 use Fed. Match Mag primers with the main reason being it increased accuracy a fair amount to merit it, I don't care what caliber or what powder I use if it improves accuracy I use mag primers.

I was near max loads on my 300SAUM with CCI Mag primers and tried the Win Mag primers and went over max and goups spread. There is a difference if you are switching.

Are you talking about the Federal 210M? If so, that is a "match" primer and not a "magnum" primer. The 210M is an intentionally rather mild primer compared to most.

Thanks for all the help fellas, Reason I asked was I've heard you'll get better, more consistant ignition in extreme conditions(cold)when using magnum primers.
