BROWNING SAFARI ID HELP
Ladies & gents: I know there was a similar post recently, and a couple of you gave me some info via PMs. but I'm sure a few of you out there can shed more light on Safari Grades in general. The pictures below are of what I believe is an unsual (at least to me) Browning. According to the serial number, it's a 1964 manufacture.

However, I've never seen the whole gambit of Belgian proof marks along the left side of the barrel and action. Further, the bolt, instead of being the usual polished steel, is finished in basically a matte patina that again I've never seen on a Safari Grade.

Any information would be appreciated. It's a nice shooter BTW. Had it out to the range and with factory or handloads, it shoots sub-moa groups. IT came with the original box as well and shoed hardly any use as the feed ramp has no wear marks on it. jorge

Good morning, I just got an FN Browning in .458. It has the identical markings. It's also made in 64. Maybe a 64 thing?

MTM: I believe you are correct. I just checked my two other SGs a 1969 & 71 and they do not have the markings. Is the bolt on yours polished or matte finish? jorge

Bolt is polished. I don't have any others to compare. Really like the .458 though.

Jorge,

Just saw this thread and thought I would add my comments as I too have a 64 vintage Safai grade. Mines a 7mm rem mag, and it too has all the proof marks as yours and MTM's do. It is my only SG, so can't comment on how common an occurance it is.

Mine also has a polished bolt handle. Have never seen one as you describe, but who knows? My first thought was that someone may have knocked the sheen down with steel wool or similar to be hinest though.

Nice rifle you have there, thanks for sharing!

Jorge -

Finally had a chance to pull my 2 Safaris out of the safe and check them. Both my 64 vintage 06 (s/n 4L27XXX) and my 65 vintage 7mm Rem Mag (s/n 5L30XXX) have the same proof marks as yours. Mine both have polished bolts.
