I've owned a couple of Whelens over the years and have been really impressed currently own a custom Whelen but was wondering about the 350 Rem maybe some input.

Very similar performance in a more compact package.

The only reason to use a .350 is if you prefer a short action over the standard length action. The Whelen offers slightly more net (under the bullet) case capacity, but the .350 offers about 0.5" more bullet run, which partly compensates for the smaller case. You pick.

I've got to agree - they're pretty similar. I've got one of each (700 CDL Whelen and 700 Classic 350) and the only advantage I can see for a 350 is the shorter action (which to me is negligible). The Whelen advantage is a longer action and magazine that allows me to use 225 BT's, seated out where they need to be, and 250 gr. bullets without having them haflway down into the case. If the 350's on a standard length action, it's a matter of personal preference.

Stick with your Whelen.
all you wind up doing is spending more money on brass to get the same thing.

I know that I'm the lone dissenter here, but look at the Remington 673 in 350 Remington Mag. I purchased one about 3 months ago, and it quickly become one of my favorites. It is quick, handy, and powerful. Just my $0.03 worth.

If you're looking for a more compact rifle, I'd give the nod to the 350. It is one of the 35 chamberings I haven't tried yet, but I would like to get ahold of one.

I can only agree....if you want the most compact rifle possible with a barrel 20" or less get a .350. If the overall length of your gun is of no matter go with the Whelen.

I have come to love the Remington Model 600 line of rifles. I have them in .223, .308, 6.5 RM and the .350 RM. They carry and balance for me much better than a longer rifle.

Everything that has been mentioned is bang on. Identical performance for all practical purposes.There is one advantage the 35 whelan has that hasn't been mentioned. You will end up with one or two more rounds in the magazine than the 350 mag. If you are hunting something that could turn on you you may want to consider that.

The bugger with that is custom dies, as well as a custom rifle. The 350 rem mag is off the shelf rifle, dies and brass. I've played with enough wildcats to have almost cure myself of them

Regardless of the logistics. Does the 35x284 measure up to the other two?

Actually I know someone who built a 35X284, on a Savage 99 lever gun. As I recall his performance was midway between a 358 win and a 35 whelen.

If you're going to go to the trouble of a wildcat short action, I'd use the 300 WSM necked up to a 35. It would be midway between the 35 whelen and 358 Norma, say 250's @ 2600+ fps. You can also download it, which is the beauty of the larger chamberings. The same buy who built the 35X284 is doing a 35 WSM, but I don't recall the status of the project.
