My rifle done got run over
Last weekend while hunting a ranch in West Texas, the ranch owner ran over my Ruger77 300 Winmag with a Tractor...so, it's in the shop getting a checkup. I've gone into my safe and have pick out a Winchester Classic Featherweight in 30 06.

As I am not too smart, I will be taking my wife on her birthday to pick out a new scope for the 30 06. I know I did not do myself any favors by buying a Beretta OU on Mother's day. I have but a few days to get the rifle scoped and a cartridge determined for deer season which starts on 11/1.

So the question I have is does anyone know what the twist rate for the Winchester Classic Featherweight in 30 06? I would like to use 180gr ammo if teh twist rate will support it.

It's 1-10" and ideal for the 180 grain bullets

That sounds pretty smart to me! Big Grin The dumb thing to do would be to leave her at home while you pick out a scope! clap

My "go-to" rifle is a Winchester Model 70 Featherweight push feed in .30-06. It has a strong preference for 180gr bullets over 150 or 165's.

I've had great success of late with the new Nosler E-Tip in 180gr (sub-MOA groups) and the 180gr Partition did yeoman service for me on my plains game safari in 2007.

If I can make a suggestion regarding a scope, I think the Zeiss Conquest series are the best value in optics out there. I have both the 3-9x40 and 3.5-10x44 and they are simply excellent.

Good luck!

P.S. I don't know if your wife shoots or hunts. In my house, I've always found it good policy to have my wife pick out her new gun/scope/binocular BEFORE I pick out mine!

A little known fact is that if you had of had a very inexpensive(aka El Cheapo), rugged and tough "Optronics Scope" on it, Optronics would have sent you a new one - at no charge.

If you had a nice Leupold on it, they would encourage you to buy another Leupold.

Gents, thanks for the input. Just got back from my weekend soiree with my mrs. Stopped by the Cabela's store in Buda, TX and picked up a Leupold VXIII. Being a fan of doo dads, I overbought and now have a 6.5X20 with turret adjustments.....will try to get to the range tomorrow for a test drive.

Oh, and my wife took it better than I expected....maybe I should have swung for a Swarovski Z series.....
