The most powerfull .30 caliber
If you make a wildcat of the .50 BMG full lenght case necked down to caliber .30 What velocity with 165-180 grain bullets? I have heard of a .338-50 BMG but I dont remeber the velocity.
A .300-50 BMG would be a real flat shooter [Smile]

Probably not as fast as you would think. The 338/50 Talbot got 3700 fps with a 250 grain bullet in a 44" barrel. A 340 Wby with a 44" barrel would get about 3400 fps. So, all that powder for 300 fps. By the way, plan on rebarreling the rifle every 250 rounds.

Yes now I remeber Talbot was the name! But did it have a 44 inch barrel?
So a .30/50BMG would not get over 4000 FPS with a 180 grainer?
I remeber that SSK Industries have done a .375-50 BMG and it shoot a 300 grainer at 5000 FPS?

What is the velocity of the 50cal SLAP round? Isn't the "penetrator" about 308 Dia.?

A 30378 weatherby with a really long barrel would probably give you the best compromise if you had to have the fastest .30 cal wouldn't it ??

The 50 Cal SLAP (M903) fires a 360grn 30 caliber bullet at approximately 4,000fps. The problem with the slap is that it's use is limited to machine guns. It can not be used on rifles since the sabots will usually destroy the muzzlebrake and sabots are notoriously innacurate. Of course it still provides a super flat trajectory and 12,793fpe of muzzle energy.

When it comes to flat shooting velosity aint everything!!! Sectionad density and ballistic cof. really make a difference alittle weight helps also. Look at the soon to be defunked .17 Rem. It really moves comming out the muzzle but at a few hundred yards it is all pooped out and really rather pathetic. On the other side of the coin take the .50 B.M.G. not so fast out the muzzel but it holds it's velosity and is very flat shooting.
One of my customers has a .30/378 with a 29" barrel that I built for him and is pushing 180s at 3750fps and shooting .428 one hole groups at 100 yards. I have seen the targets but do not know what his load is or the pressures.
