merlinronage old questions.......
35 whelen or .338-06 ??
1909 argie or fn24/30 ??
i never had anything over .30 caliber and like both of these rounds.
i have both actions in good shape bolts/safeties already done and have an itch!
don't need either one for any particular reason, i have a .257 roberts, a 6.5/.270 AI., a 7x57AI and two 30-06's. i just want one or the other.
your choices and reasons/opinions, good or bad, would be appreciated, please...thanks.

Flip a coin.....they are roughly equivalent.....maybe make one of each since you have two actins.
Neither will be a cheap build but the 1909 (assuming it retains the original bottom metal) would be my choice.....
Have at it.

DWright.338-06 hands down! Better selection of bullets, sectional density, and flatter shooting. If you go with the Improved version, you give up very little if anything to the Mag, and with the lighter spectrum of bullet weight, even beats factory mag ammo ballistics.

merlinronvapodog,
gee, thanks,

... that settled my mind!
the 1909 has the original bottom metal and the 24/30 has the military bow cut off with a shotgun style bow (with the long tapered tang down the inside of the grip) in it's place and a pachmeyer style checkered floorplate release button....very classic looking on a light gun.

jsl3170I own neither but have been having some very good conversations with other forum members about the 338-06. all I have spoken to have praised the cartridge highly. in addition, the historical data out there on the cartridge's lineage leads to the conclusion that it is an efficient killer on game while being supremely approachable by shooters.
sounds like a winner to me! search "338-06 truck gun" in this forum for a nice example of one done by member, Forrest. obviously, one can be done up into a nice trim package.
perhaps other members would be willing to post photos of their's for different ideas and interpretations of this caliber?

You did however neglect to throw in the 9.3 X 62 option.....then you need one of each.....

Thats what I did got a .338-06 and a Whelen, you will not be sorry. 9.3x62 would be fun to play with as well. Damn it vapodog I'll have to start looking for a donor action.
