Im looking for a load for the 7.65x54mm Argentine using Reloader 15.

The info on 7.65X53 plus some calculation and interpolation shows that 43gr.of Reloader 15 should be a safe starting point with a 150 gr. bullet. Published load data varies greatly on this cartridge. For example. Cartridges Of The World shows 47 gr. of IMR 4895 w/ a 150 gr. bullet where Lee Data shows 43gr. of H 4895 as max. Not exactly apples to apples but indicative just the same.

A published load for a 150 gr. bullet in the .300 Savage (smaller capacity than the 7.65x53) is 43 gr. of Reloader 12 a faster burning powder. This should hopefully calm any worry about the recommended 43. gr. of RL15. roger

What about the use of .303 British loads?
According to Donnelly they have similar case capacity. 57.11 for the 7.65x54 and 55.65 for the .303. i do not know how the diference in geometry would afect them.

The problem with the longer bullets stems from the short neck and possibly a shallow throat. If this is the case than the longer bullets will start eating up the usable capacity and what loading similarity between two equal capacity cases disappears if one has a short neck with a reasonably shallow throat depth vs one with a longer neck and deeper throat.

Personally I think the 40 gr. of RL 15 would sound about right but not knowing your rifles particulars I would feel more comfortable staring at 38.5gr. and working up.

A mod. 91 Argentine Mauser is the only action I ever crushed when changing barrels. I could not believe how soft it really was.I tell you this so you understand what you might think as a Whimpy recommended starting load. roger

Ammoguide shows a MAX load of45 grains of H380 which has a similar burn rate to R15 with a 174 gr Hornady. The ADI manual shows a start load of 43 grains of 2209 (H4350) which is slightly slower than R15, with the same bullet, so I'd reckon that Bartsche's start load of 40 grains R15 with a 185 gr bullet is sensible.

I would have to check my data, but I developed a load starting at 40.0 grains and stopped at 47.0 grains with RL15.
I did this with a 1909 in very tight condition not a 1891 which is weaker.

I hit 2600 fps with a remington 180 grain round nose in .311 diameter.


Not bad for a cartridge that is well over 100 years old.


I had no pressure signs at all and still shoot this load thru it today.

In fact Il probably use it in Idaho this year on whitetail again.

If it is a 1891 best start at a lower level.

I will be using .313" bullets FMJ (185gn) made in Argentina. (target shooting)
My rifle is a Sportinf 98 Mauser rebarreled to 7,65mm.
