Mauser98 switch barrel take-down in calibres:
7x57 and 9.3x62
What barrel lengths would you choose for each, and do you see the two cases feeding ok from the same action?

velocity wise the loner the better in most cases.
I like the 24-26" range.
Nice gap between the calibers by the way. wave

22" for both. Get the 9.3X62 to feed and the 7X57 will follow.

Any gunsmith who can do a switch barrel take-down on a 98, should have no problem making two different cartridges feed Big Grin

I have most often seen a 9.3x62 and 7x64 combo (shoulders are similar), but I'm sure the 7x57 will work just the same.

someone please correct me if I am wrong, but I was under the impression that the 9.3x62 case was just a tad larger in diameter than the regular 7 x 57 case. Wouldn't that mean that the smaller cartridge would feed more (for lack of a better word) sloppy?

I would have them both 23 1/2" in a masuer. Thats what my cz 9.3 has and thats what I have requested for my impending mauser .404 I think it offers some length and some handiness.

I am also partial to 25 1/2" barrels. On Varmint guns I like 26"or longer.

22WRF,

You are correct. This poor quality pic shows a 9.3x62 in the center, 7x64 on the left, 7x57 on the right. Many of the modern switch barrel rifles are push feeds and are less critical. For a switch barrel CRF, I would recommend the 7x64 and the 9.3x62, as the dimensions are more similar.

ALF,
switch barrel in 7x64 & 9.3x64,
are not the base dia. on these two brennekes different ?
.0471"(7x64), .0495"(9.3x64)
that is the reason I avoided this combination and went for the 7x57/9.3x62. I also believed that having two classic mauser cartridges in a mauser action rather appropriate and befitting.

PC,
somewhere between 23.5 and 25" is sounding good.
