Any of them would probably work just fine. Painted properly a blued gun will resist rust just fine. Guy's hunted with Blued guns for several hundred years before they started making stainless so I wouldn't worry too much about it. If one in particular fits you much better than the others choose it, otherwise I reccommend that you buy the least expensive of the bunch and use whatever you save to buy a better scope. I'd rather hunt with a cheap rifle with a good scope than a good rifle with a cheap scope...........DJ

The howa and the weatherby vanguard are both the same rifle as howa makes both.They are well made rifles and are a bargain at the price.

I'm a little biast here but i would go for the savage they are pretty accurate out of the box.that would be my choice but see what is best for you

I'll have to go along with the Savage fans, they ain't pretty, but for the money, the accuracy is great out of the box.

i have a savage model 16 (the short action) in .270WSM its stainless steel and synthitic stock. very light rifle with very hard recoil. but add a recoil pad and that problem is solved. i wanted a 7mmWSM but i could only order it in .270WSM. the next rifle i buy will be the exactly the same only in the 7mmWSM, i want to own all the new WSM and WSSM calibers. im 15 years old and thats my opinion.

I'd go for either the Savage or Howa, the Savage with Accutrigger is a fine shooting rifle. I have one of the Vanguard Deluxes in 30-06 I picked up during their closeout for $299 last month and it is a very fine rifle even for the regular price. The Howa is exactly the same rifle and I don't think you can go wrong for the price.

Charles Daly has a Sporting-grade in a synthetic stock for $489... Sure is a nice lookin' rifle, never had the pleasure of shooting one though...



I really wish Wal-Mart up here would start carrying some guns. At least in a few stores, anyways, their practically giving away Vanguards at some US locations...

I met a guy out the range one day who was working up some loads for an up coming antelope hunt. After talking to him for a little while, I got the impression that this guy really knew his stuff. He was shooting a Howa Lightning chambered in 7mm SAUM. I don't think I've seen where Howa chambers that caliber, but this rifle was definitely chambered for it. Anywho, the rifle was pretty light and it looked like that SAUM was really kicking the snot out of him. It was accurate enough though I distinctly remember that it didn't like to group any better than an inch at 100 yards - good enough. I think maybe if the rifle was a tad heavier and perhaps the barrel profile a bit thicker those groups may have shrank a little more. But for a rifle that you'd have to carry all day, for miles and miles, I'd imagine that giving a little accuracy for weight reduction was a fair compromise.

Oh, I believe this rifle was stainless and in a synthetic stock. For the money, it didn't look like a bad rig to carry.

Last year in a Saskatchewan deer camp I hunted with a couple from Texas. They each had a Winchester M70 push feed 7 mm RM with stainless steel and black synthetic stock. They were accurate when we checked sights, and they told me they bought them because they were rugged and cheap.

"Cheap and Cheerful" as it were.

I don't see this choice in the online catalog, but you could probably find one (used or like new condition).

Savage 116 SS are under $400.00 here in Oregon, so I'd shop around. I am looking at getting one myself!

I like the Howas but like the Savage a little better.

I picked up a Interarms Mark X for 420.00 a few years back.

I got a chance for a good look at one of the Weatherby Vanguard rifles. Trigger needed work and was sharp on the finger but the rest seemed fine except for that awful stock. The Howa stock was much nicer and more to my personal taste anyway. The Weatherby style does not fit me in the least so that model is off my list. The CD rifles are scarce around here and by some of the comments on this and other forums, I would want to carefully examine one before considering it. I hear through the grapevine that RSR and Ruger are parting their ways so there is likely to be a closeout of the product with substantial discounts. I also here the 7mm Mags and others are backed up in distributors warehouses so better deals may be comming as they clear them out for next year. Thanks for all your input.

I have an older Vanguard that I turned into a .257Wby. I have been really happy with the action and workmanship. Just my $.02.

You could also check the CDNN Investments catalog. They buy-up discontinued firearms and sell them at discounted prices. What they have of course is pot luck, but if price is your driver they have low ones.
