m_walkerusing the pistols vs the rifles for backpack hunting
I am new to backpack hunting, and am doing some planning right now. So I am considering the weight and utility issues for backpacking. What are your thoughts on using the long range handguns like Thompson Contender vs a light rifle expecting the shots to be within pistol range. I like the portability idea for sure, just set up a nice holster probably easier than anything worked out with rifle and pack. Not to sure about the weight though gotta check that. Any experiences or thoughts.
thanks m

MarcI did that for a few years around 1990. I used a Contender in 7-30 Waters. I hung a holster off the shoulder straps so it hung across my chest. It was a handy rig. Both hands free.
I gave it up because the handgun wasn't really up to the task in the open country I hunt. I had to pass up to many bucks because conditions didn't allow effective use of a handgun. It is a nice idea but it didn't work for me.

gumboot458... Using a frame pack works great with a rifle ... just as long as you have the horns and not a hoop top ....... just put the sling over one horn and off ya go ... I,ve walked and packed nearly 30 miles in a day with my rifle mostly hung on the horn of my Camp Trails freighter frame sana hoop .....

MS HitmanI do this with my .309 JDJ and have no problem out to 300 yards shooting off my backpack.
