314russellBest warm weather, mountain backpacking boots?
Fellas, I'd like some advice on favorite boots for warm weather hunting in the mountains with a heavy pack. I have an upcoming hunt in unit 16b of the Gila. I h e been training with a heavy pack with light military boots that I think are too light for a 90 lbs pack. The other pair of boots I've been training with are some all leather asolos with gore-tex. my feet sweat bad in the boots and I have gotten a few blisters because of it. I feel like I can get by without the goretex. Models I am interested in are kenetrek's mountain safari and lowa's baltoro, and trekker. These boots are on the heavy side and are also all leather so I dont know how cool and breathable they will actually be. I would be interested in lighter options too. Thanks for the help.

314russellNon goretex. I can see that there was a thread about boots just before this. My questions have not been addressed yet. Any advice is appreciated.

375erI have a pair of non-gortex Asolo's that I wear for summer hiking etc. and I love them. All leather uppers; model 535 or 520, I can't remember. They get warm, but not intolerable even on 90 degree days.

I have the Meindl , non -gortex , which Cabelas sell , they are great here in Namibia , which is hot and dry , not too heavy , and they take a heavy pack no problem. My Kenetreks give me blisters and this is why I went to the Meindl's

lokiI have a pair of Limmer Standard Boots that I love for backpacking. These are seriously heavy boots and provide a lot of support for your ankles and sole of your foot. If you are carrying a 90 LBS pack, you could benefit from the heavy sole of a boot such as this. These boots are not cheap -- $350. They have sometimes been touted as the world's best backpacking boot.
Of course, that is very contingent on the kind of backpacking you are doing. If you are carrying a light pack on good trails, you might want to go with a lighter boot that weighs half as much. If you are carrying a heavy pack on trails that are strewn with rocks or climbing trails on raw rock, these boots are ideal. As I say, I love them for backpacking.
For elk hunting I prefer to use Meindl Perfekt Hunter boots. But then I'm not generally carrying that heavy pack when elk hunting.

sambarman338If having rands around boots is important, why aren't Meindl's made thicker/stronger? The sidling on mine is starting to split and the stuff on my Kiwi mate's hangs off in untidy strips. I am tempted to buy a heavy-weight Sorel next time, where the rubber bit at the bottom IS the boot.
