jro45I'm have not really made my mind up yet. I'm concidering either the 500 or the 400. I might be shooting him up a tree.I know the 400 is good out and past a little 100 yds the 500 at 1400fps I would put at 75yds maybe 90yds max. So probably the 400gr bullet.

Lee MartinIf was going to hunt bear, I'd probably use a 440 grain hard cast.

jro45I don't shoot lead bullets in my S&W500 no way shape or form. I shot lead in my 44 mag and that was the last time I'll shoot lead in a fast revolver.

475/480I dont know what the problem with lead is,I have shot literaly thousands thru my SW 500-8-3/8" bll with no problems and many thru the PC 6.5" and 4" 500.
Depends on the size of bear if you know nothing over 250-300lb I would use the 350 XTP or the 400gr JSP if big bears are the norm I would go with heavy lead 440gr-495gr WFNGC hard cast and just as fast as you can shoot accurately.

Redhawk1Both my BFR in 500 MAG and my 4 inch S&W500 shoot either case or jacketed accurately. I currently have 370 gr. cast with gas checks, 440 gr. cast with gas checks and 575 gr. cast with gas checks loaded, I also have 275 gr. Barnes and 400 gr. Sierra loaded up. Most shots will be under 25 yards and I can shoot all the above very accurately at 50 yards off hand. I will be hunting black bear in Maine.

C. A. PlaterMy Encore .500 has shown a preference for Leadheads 440 grain WFN. A powder charge of 40.0 grains of WC680(AA1680) produces an average velocity of 1650 FPS in my gun.
