.500 S&W 4 inch barrel
Gentlemen

Some input please.
Has anyone shot this short version of the .500 S&W ?
If only they made a 5 or 6 inch version thumb

Cheers,

André

I put 50 rounds of heavy 440s through one, and it isn't as bad as you'd think. Personally, I like the 8 3/4" version better, but the short tubed 500s do handle pretty well.

I haven't shot one but it looks way cool. I actually prefer the shorter bbl. I have several M29 4" guns & they are great shooters.

I have 1 and it shoots my 515gr WFNGC cast bullets at 1300 fps into under 2" at 25 yds.
It will shoot my 575gr WFNGC cast bullet at 1250 fps accurately also.

The New 460 is also comming in a 4.5 " version and it will have a 4.5 " of barrel unlike the 500 which is really 4"

Were making comps for those also !!

I have both the 4 and 8 in models. The 8 in doesnt have any porting. The 4 is my favorite and it kicks way less than my Ruger SRH in 454 casull.

My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

What is the actual barrel length on that model ? I thought it actualy was a 3" with a 1" compensator.

Barrel is 3" + 1" comp= 4"

I have one and have shot about 500 rounds through it. Very accurate at 25 yards. I have shot from 275 gr. to 575 gr. through it with out one problem.

Why anyone would want one of the short barreled handguns of any caliber is beyound me. You lose a great deal of power and they are not accurate at all. In fact it is almost impossible to hit anything with one except at spitting distances.
They are bought by certain people for the "wow what is that cannon your shooting?" responses by others at the shooting range when the muzzle blast loosens their dentures and blinds them from the fireball caused by unburned powder that the short barrel sprays around.
I would avoid buying one at all costs if it were me.

Just because you can't shoot one well does not mean others can't. I can keep all my rounds from my 4 inch S&W500 in a 4 inch circle at 50 yards with open sights off hand. I mounted a Ultra-dot on it and now shoot 2 to 2 1/2 inch groups off my shooting sticks.

Sounds like sour grapes because of your shooting ability. And why is it such a concern of yours what we buy???? Are you the resident expert???

Grow up. shame

Redhawk1,

I'm with you on this one. My 4 inch 500 S&W is more accurate then I can shoot with open sights. At 50 yards off hand, I can tag a 6 inch circle with open sights with the 400 gr. full steam loads. I know all the (including myself) owners I know who have a 500 S&W can walk the talk with shoot-ability on this pistol. Until you own one and shoot it, stick to what you know, cause you don't know a thing about the 4 inch 500 S&W. Roll Eyes

CK,
It is funny how some people like Me_Plat don't have a clue. Some people think just because either they can't shoot well or do not have a need for it, no one has a need for it. My 4 inch 500 MAG is coming to Alaska also, for my tent gun and my back up gun. Last year I had my Ruger Redhawk with a 3 inch barrel in 454 Casull with me as my tent gun in Alaska.

Me_Plat, just for you information, most of the time I shoot my 4 in 500 MAG I am all alone, I don't have to impress anyone. But I sure am impressed with my 4 inch 500 MAG.

I wanted the short barrel model to carry for protection in Grizzly country. Life is full of choices and since it was my money I chose to spend it on this. Cheers.

I still say that to get one of those short barreled punkin rollers is goofy. Only a uninformed person would even waste their money on one.
Anyone that would even recommend one is being rather cruel to the person

Up close and personal,That would be a great choice for personal protection in Grizz country in my opinion. If for hunting I would opp for a longer barrel to get the max performance the big .500 has.I went the in between route on my .454 and got the 6.5 incher and sometimes wish I had went longer for the ultimate velocity but it serves me well here in Idaho for Grizzly/Black Bear Protection also.

To each his own and I would not knock anyone for there choice in firearms..Weez loves them all in Idaho.

You guys know that anyone that is serious about handguns would never spend good money for a short barreled handgun except for home or personal protection.

It may be designed for spitting distances for mean animals but the power loss is what i am concerned about. I wouldn't own one at all because of the inaccuracy and power loss.

I have a 2.25" Ruger SP101 I can't hit worth a darn at 25yrds but it is fun to shoot and I like the looks of it. I bought the gun just because I like it and wanted a backup gun for up close and personal. If I had the money I would buy the short 500S&W and enjoy it also. It all comes down to personal choice if you don't like short guns nobody is going to force you to buy one.

I also like wheel guns with long barrels is that also being foolish?

You mighty right no one is going to force me to buy one of the things. i still don't understand why some have this need to try to impress everyone with a lot of flash and thunder.
I guess it is a macho kinda thing. Kinda like I can't impress anyone any other way so I will deafen them with my short barreled punkin roller and feel good about myself.
Get yourself a long barreled revolver and quit pretending like you have something in one of the short barreled blasters.
